Every hour five people 12-1- " 9: Activities " Found property Security police apprehended a fugitive attempting to enter base to pick up a friend July 15. He was said to be armed and dangerous and was wanted by the Clearfield Police Department for parole violation and felony burglary. The base operator received a bomb threat at 11 p.m. July 15 from a male caller. He said the bomb was located in Bldg. 220. The building was evacuated and roped off. The security police bomb detector dog and 2701st Explosive Ord are killed in motor vehicle accidents. Every week 800 people are killed in motor vehicle accidents and 35,000 are injured. Motor vehicle accidents are the No. 1 killer of children age one and older. Each year about 810 children under the age of five die from injuries received in accidents; The chances of being killed in a motor vehicle accident are 25 times greater when thrown from a vehicle. It is the second collision that injures and kills people in an accident. The initial collision is the crash of a motor vehicle into some object. The second collision occurs when unbelted occupants still moving forward, are stopped by the car's windshield, steering something wheel, doors, dashboard or other hard, interior surface. Most motor vehicle accidents happen within 25 miles of home, at speeds of less than 40 miles ;'V' per hour. When a driver brakes at a speed of 30 mph, an infant held in an occupant's lap or arms will be thrown forward, even when held tightly by a restrained adult, and will almost certainly strike the dashboard or windshield. The unrestrained occupant will also be propelled forward, probably into and crushing the child. Motor vehicle accidents cost America an estimated $39.3 billion each year. , A set of keys were left in Bldg. 1219 July 12. A set of keys were found near Bldg. 520 July 13. These items may be claimed by the owners at Security Police Headquarters, Bldg. 1219. Motorcyclists: Know base regulations that By SrA. Cortney Hollister 2849th Security Police Squadron With the warm weather, more and more people are riding their motorcycles. However, because motorcycles are clear weather vehicles, many people are unfamiliar with the regulations on base covering these vehicles. ' A motorcycle must be registered on base the same as a car. Since the state of Utah requires a notation on the operator's license for motorcycles, the base does also. In addition, the motorcycle operator must pass the Better Biking Program, which is a 3x2 hour course of classroom training concerning hazard awareness and safe biking attitudes, and three hours of hands-o- n motorcycle training. Call the Base Safety Office, Ext. 72933 and ask for Terry Olsen for class scheduling. The classes are available Mondays and Wednesdays of each week through September. Motorcycle parking is also slightly different than what is required of cars. Under DOD fuel conservation directives, motorcycles are vehicles that are ' given parking preference equivalent to provid ed to car pool vehicles. Parking lot monitors will designate specific areas for motorcycle parking with signs andor ropes and stanchions or other clearly identifiable areas. General parking areas will have designated motorcycle parking areas. No motorcycles will be parked in safety zones unless specifically identified for that parking. All motorcycles must have the ap-- . propriate decals for the parking lots they use, and those motorcycles decaled specially (XX or X, Handicapped or Parking by Permit) may park in those spaces. These parking stickers are to be placed on the rear fender or the left front fork. Please take all necessary precautions. Remember, although the state of Utah does not require a helmet to be worn, Air Force regulations require that one be worn at all times when operating a cycle on base. This regulation also includes the passenger. As with other vehicles, your motorcycle must be insured. If you have any questions concerning motorcycles, call the Security Police Traffic Section, Ext. 77871.
