The trainer is scheduled for delivery in late 1987. "The is perhaps the first design to have supportability in mind so early in the engineering process," said Capt. Tom Miller, deputy program manager for Logistics. The program motto is "Design for support, design the support, support the design." Captain Miller is responsible for ensuring these logistics concepts are included in the design and development phases of T-46- A the NGT. The Air Force requires a design three criteria: that will meet that nearly all repairs be done locally rather than at a depot. A maintenance concept Reliability. Equipment should work so it can rate of 99 percent. jbe used at a mission-reliabilit- y does malfunction that should be easily Equipment removed and replaced or repaired in the shortest possible time. The fewer repairs needed, the quicker the aircraft can be repaired and the more trainers will be available to fly. Program officials say the availability requirement for the NGT is 85-9- 0 percent. Airmen's Trading Post celebrates anniversary Maintenance time must be kept low and flying hours high by having the parts easily accessible and e by providing repairs. Nearly all the NGT's avionics are kept in a waist-leve-l compartment in the nose. The engine can be changed in 30 minutes. Captain Miller said the new trainer will be simple and use only proven technology. . "The goal of the NGT design is not technology, but rather an easily maintained, reliable aircraft that will allow us to train the largest number of undergraduate pilot training students," Captain Miller said. The aircraft will be designed to have no programmed maintenance, the captain explained. In NGT to a layman's terms, he compared the car: It can be fixed at home or at the local garage rather than shipping it every year to Detroit for repairs. Program officials use two sources of input to help make the new trainer more supportable and reliable: Air Training Command the AFALD Directorate of Lessons Learned. Both sources combined their lessons learned on the 7 trainer now being used, and 85 percent of this information was applied to designing the new NGT. Volunteers at the Airmen's Trading Post will celebrate its second anniversary May 13 in Bldg. 394 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. All military members and their dependents are invited to share in the celebration and share cake, punch, coffee and popcorn. There will also be balloons for the kids and a drawing for free items from the post. "We would like to show people what we do here and encourage more volunteers," said Teresa Jones. Trading Post chairperson. "We easier-to-mak- state-of-the-a- rt T-46- A T-3- For major repairs, parts will have to be sent to a depot for repair. Depot planning is already in progress even though the first aircraft will not be delivered until late 1987. Another unique concept to the program is that spare parts will be provided for the initial period the aircraft enters the active Air Force inventory. The number and types of spare parts needed will be determined by a resident support team, whose recommendations will become part of the contract. Support equipment for repair will be procured in quantities needed to maintain a squadron. Only 10 percent of the required support equipment will have to be specifically designed by the contractor. The other 90 percent is government-furnishe- d e Air Force equipment equipment that is compatible with the trainer. in-hou- se in-us- The cost of the trainer's support will be included in the contract, AFALD officials said. Incentives are given the contractor for reducing the equipment that must be designed specifically for the NGT, and for ensuring the Air Force will be able to maintain the aircraft with the least possible initial contractor support. (AFNS) will also introduce some new ideas during the celebration," she added. "One of the new ideas proposed is for a class on arts and crafts for post volunteers," she said. "Although, it is not scheduled to start until are being held now," she September, sign-up- s continued. Free child care is provided at the Child Care Center when volunteers are on duty. Airmen's Trading Post hours are Thursdays and Fridays, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Anyone interested in volunteering can call Mrs. Jones, Ext. 73457 or 776-119- 0.
