As cold weather arrives we think of "colds" and "flu." Chances are that some member of your family will catch a "cold" during the coming winter months. During a severe flu epidemic about 30 percent of the community may get the disease. The terms "cold" and "flu" mean different things. Influenza or "flu" is caused by many potent viral strains while the common cold is caused by weaker viral families. Symptoms of flu are: an abrupt onset of high fever (100 to 103 degrees), muscle aches, headache and an overall feeling of being ill. Symptoms may also include a runny nose and cough, although they are more commonly seen in a simple "cold" with only a slight fever and no body aches. You can't catch a cold or flu from exposure to low temperatures. Colds and flu come from being exposed to an infected person. During winter months we are more 5 25, 1981 mi cos apt to breathe virus particles spread from coughs and sneezes of our coworkers and families. It is important that ill and elderly people be given flu shots. It is also likely that others may benefit as well. Consult your physician or local health establishment for flu shot service. Doctors believe that ill effects from colds and flu can be reduced by following good nutrition guidelines and getting plenty of rest and exercise. It is also known that those who deal well with stress have a decreased incidence of illness. Smoking may also increase the ill effects of the flu. If you do get the flu, use common sense about how much to interrupt your daily routine. A high fever may require bed rest, yet a cold is a very different matter. Dr. Doline, professor of medicine at the University of Vermont College of Medicine, feels it probably won't do any particular harm to keep working with a common cold if you feel up to it. With both conditions it is important to increase fluid intake to prevent dehydration because it helps keep mucous secretions in the pulmonary tract more liquid. Even if you're not hungry, stay well whether it's water, juice, hydrated broth, jello or even soda pop. Liquid intake should not include alcohol, even PROPERTIES in the form of a hot toddy, because it tends to reduce the body's ability to fight disease. Aspirin andor Tylenol may be used to reduce fever and muscular aches; however, they do not fight the virus. remedies such as decongestants and cough medicines won't hasten your recovery, but they might bring some symptomatic relief. If you have chest pains, difficulty breathing, are coughing up abnormal Over-the-count- er looking mucous, or have significant pains in one or both ears and the problem persists, see a physician. It is a must to read all labels on medications and check with your doctor before taking. Never give medications to young children before consulting a physician. There is hope in the future for improved flu vaccines and the creation of intiviral drugs that will be effective against cold viruses. , For health's sake Enjoy a sound exercise program Wrangler AS TRADTIONAL AS CHRISTMAS...
