Show Page 30 November 13, 1981 HILL TOP TIMES Theodore "Bud" Benard has worked as a civil servant at Hill AFB since 1948. He has held many jobs before becoming chief, Workload Control Unit, Workloading, Manpower and Field Services Branch, Directorate of Maintenance. He has served an equal amount of time on active military duty and in the Reserve. During World War II, he served two '., and one-hal- f years in the U.S. Army, 19 months in the Pacific area where he saw combat action in Okinawa and the Islands as a combat engineer with the 96th Infantry Philippine Division. As a reservist in the U.S. Army, he is now a personnel management National Guard, Reserve Officer Training Corps and civilian teams from most states. In August, his rifle team completely dominated the national rifle matches at Camp Perry, Ohio, placing first and second in one event and second and third in another. The active service Marine team won first in the second specialist, holding the rank of master sergeant. In addition, he is head coach of the All Army Reserve Rifle Team, which he says is the highlight of his ' life. started out holding first sergeants' jobs in several units within the 96th ARCOM," Mr. Benard said, "then I devoted full time to the marksmanship training unit and have competed in the national rifle matches at Camp Perry, "I the Utah State Rifle and Pistol Association, president of the Bountiful of Rifle Club and secretary-treasure- r and fire with so many great individuals," he said. Mr. Benard is active in the Boy Scouts of America program. He teaches safety classes to the scouts and for the last 12 years has coached little league baseball. "I expect to coach at least two ; more years," he said, "because two of my sons are still playing." His oldest son, Blaine, was chosen as outstanding athlete for Bountiful High School in his senior year, was "All State" in football, basketball and baseball, and attended the University of Utah on a baseball scholarship until he left to serve a mission for his church. His two other sons are following in Blaine's footsteps. One of his three daughters was chosen "Outstanding Woman Athlete" at Weber State College in Ogden in 1979. . Mr. Benard is currently president of Ohio, every year since 1954.". He is consistently among the top marksmen in the nation and has won. hundreds of trophies and awards and many certificates of achievement signed by general officers. "Now, as coach of the All Army Reserve Rifle Team, I'm still shooting." The team is selected from all interested reservists in the United States ' through a series of area elimination matches held each spring at Fort Benning, Ga.
