HILLTOP TIMES March 27, 1981 any poreimts proud Looim clhoinraps On March 7, there were many workers, at Hill AFB who had more than a basketball fan interest in the women's high school state basketball championship game between Layton and Cottonwood High Schools. The Layton team claimed their first state basketball championship with a perfect record of 21 wins and no losses. The workers, both present and retired, were parents of the team members who watched the Layton team defeat their opponents 58-5- 0 and win the state honor. Watching the game was Col. Joseph Battaglia, Hill AFB commander, whose daughter Mary was one of the team managers. Wallace J. Kidd and Terriell Wozniak, both retired, were also on hand to watch their ' daughters, who were also managers, DeAnn Kidd and Inez Wozniak. Frank Hare, an employee in the Directorate of Distribution, watched his daughter Venus named for state daughter Dana Pobanz. Also on hand was Xavier Contreras, a base retiree, whose daughter Terry was a member of the team. David Beckman, an aircraft electrician in the Directorate of Maintenance, and Maj. Dwight Helton, flight test, also in the Directorate of Maintenance, cheered their daughters Kelly Beckman and V Joyce Helton. William Brown, a retiree from the 388th Tactical Fighter Wing, rooted for his daughter Melba Tyson. .. MSgt. Gordon Hatch, assigned to the 388th Tactical Fighter Wing, was also on hand cheering daughter April. These two girls were honors. Barbara Coryell also received a cheering "come on" from her father who is a base retiree. Civil MSgt. Dale Crawford, Engineering Division, and Maj. Joe Zahradka, Directorate of Contracting and Manufacturing, also lent their daughters Lori Crawford and Tawnja Zahradka the victory sign.
