Townsend began his lifetime career working with boilers as a Chief Boilerman in the U.S. Navy in 1935. While in the Navy, he spent 38 months in the South Pacific and engaged in 10 major battles while assigned to the USS y, 10 a.m.-- 6 -- Saratoga. In 1956, Townsend began his civil service career here as a boilerman working operator. He became a foreman in 1957 and in .1975, he received the Civil Engineering Foreman of the Year Award.
