David Korzep, base Civil Engineer. However, even though the temperature is still high, people in the Civil Engineering Division are well into preparing for winter and have provided all base activities a checklist for use by real property custodians to assist them in their preparation for the frosty onslaught. Colonel Korzep said that October has also been selected for final fall cleanup and requested all activities to participate in preparing the base for winter. 'There are many areas which must be reviewed and actions taken to prepare for winter," he said. "This includes cleaning up debris, removing stored material from docks and access ways, doing exterior touch-u- p preparation now will certainly pay off when the first snow arrives," he said. e a During the week of Oct. cleanup effort is planned. Quality control evaluations will also be conducted by both the Eagle Eye program and Civil Engineering Division during the last week of the month to effectiveness of the overall campaign and take corrective actions on deficiencies.' As part of a winter follow-o- n program, a special snow removal operations center has validate been established within the Civil Engineering Division to be staffed 24 hours a day during , periods of heavy snowfall. The center will assist the Civil Engineering Division equipment operations in providing customer information on the status of snow removal or response time to unforeseen priority requirements. "During actual snow removal operations, the center will direct approximately 28 pieces of equipment and over 45 personnel at the same time for snow removal operations from the airfield, base roads and sidewalks. "Snow removal is accomplished using a painting and storing summer grounds maintenance equipment. 4 'It also includes obtaining snow shovels, calcium chloride for ice control and getting vehicles equipped with snow tires. "Efforts expended for this cleanup and TFS returns (From page 1) and they have used every avenue to show experience for many. Attaining a successful deployment is also due partly to the support from the local nationals. "The reception we have received and the relationship which has continued throughout is the best I've seen anywhere," Colonel Michels said. "The Norwegians really cared 7 base-wid- 15-1- 9, it" The deployed force will be forever touched by the pleasantness of the people they met a strong reminder of their purpose for going. Normally, the first snow happens so snow tires should be by used by that time," he said. "Items of personal equipment such as rubber boots should also be part of individual winter preparation. Not only do they protect the feet, but they can be vital when walking on d ice or surfaces," he continued. "Other factors to be considered for winter planning should be allowing additional time to get to work. This should allow for watching for snow removal equipment and additional caution at pedestrian crosswalks," he said. "Preparation for winter is not just a responsibility of the Civil Engineering Division. It is critical to each individual. A little time in preparation now will minimize interruption of base missions later, improve safety and make the coming months tolerable," he concluded. For information on snow removal operations call Ext. 2929 (DEMG). Additional personnel will also be available on Ext. 3610 during normal duty hours from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. all assigned organizations. Deviations to priorities can only be made through the chief, Base Operations (airfield requirements) and the duty officer at the Snow Removal Operations Center (roads and sidewalks). "People desiring changes should not make contact with equipment operators because they have been instructed to react only to those specific personnel," said Colonel Korzep. "Among the biggest problems of past winters was lack of proper equipment on private vehicles. For example, during the first two snow storms, less than 50 percent of vehicles coming on base were equipped with snow tires," said Colonel Korzep. "Even with the best managed snow removal program, there are occasions when snow removal is being accomplished during shift changes and roadways may not be totally void of snow and ice. Under these conditions, use of snow tires will aid in keeping traffic moving," he commented. mid-Novemb- snow-packe- "Although there are no mandatory requirements to equip private vehicles with 'Off "The U.S. Air Force," a tune popularly known as "Off w Go...' er : Into The Wild Blue Yonder," has been adopted as the official song of the Air Force.
