Show HILL TOP TIMES Page 26 April 27, 1979 Turtle Trotter riiris:B.ostoji:.Marathon- Mill AFB Amorg the 7,900 runners who qualified for the recent Boston Marathon held on April 16 (Patriots Day), 25 runners were from Utah, and one of that number was from Hill AFB. Lt. Col. Ernest J. Davenport from the Directorate of Materiel Management and a member of the base Turtle Trotters Club, was among the 7,900 official entrants who qualified to run. QUALIFYING TIMES were three hours for men under 40 and three hours, thirty minutes for men over 40 and all women. Entrants were distributed as follows: 4,400 under 40 ; 3,000 over 40 and 500 women. . Approximately one million spectators were present, the largest live audience for a sporting event. The day of the marathon was cold, about 40 degrees with a light drizzle and slight headwind from 6 mph. THE COURSE RAN from Hopkinton to Boston, a total of 26.2 miles. It was slightly downhill for the first five miles, level for the next 13, uphill for three and level to the finish. The course was Hopkinton, Ashland, J Framingham, . Notich, Wellesley, Newton, : Brookline, Boston. Organization for the race was excellent, Colonel Davenport said. There was no waiting line to pick up numbers, good transportation to the race starting point, aid stations along the route were well stocked and staffed and finish line procedures were excellent. FOLLOWING IS Colonel Davenport's own in the narrative about his participation Boston Marathon: My decision to enter Boston was made after I ran the Pioneer Marathon at St. George, Utah, last October. With a good finish there, I wanted to see how well I could compete in Boston. 5 I trained all winter by running miles each week. Additionally, I was able to get my weight down about 10 pounds. ABOUT 25 UTAH RUNNERS got together to arrange a special airline fare for the Boston trip. The runners were from the Salt Lake City, Provo and Logan areas and included one girl, Julie Hess, from Logan. The race start was well thought out. Based on qualifying times, runners were divided into groups of 500. These groups were arranged one behind the other so that the fastest runners were in front and the slowest in the rear , I was in the second group of 500 which was a very good starting position being only about . 30 yards from the official start line. 9 I was which that number signified My 59th runners for time had the best qualifying over 40 years old. It appeared that all the people in Boston were out on the streets for the last 3 miles. They crowded near the road, but were not impeding the runners. or THE SPECTATORS read your race number and give you encouragement all along the way. During the height of the finish (about one hour from 2hrs. 20 min. to 3 hrs. 20 min.) there are over 100 runners crossing the finish line every minute. Still the officials were able to correctly score each runner's exact time. Results My time of 2 hours, 43 minutes and 35 seconds gave me 971st place of all runners and placed me in the top 13 percent. Since I am 42 years old I receive a place in the veterans division (over 40) and here I placed about 45th of the 3,000 runners in this group to place in the top IVz percent. IN THE UTAH GROUP, I had the third best time of the 25 runners. So, although I missed my goal of 2 hours and 38 minutes, I did feel very satisfied with the position that I finished. Boston next year? Probably not. The experience was great but the expense is also. I'll probably run three marathons in Utah and save my pennies for the Honolulu or Seattle marathon next year. Boston is considered to be the best, but the I held my about seven minutes. Race Progress First five miles, with the slight downhill, allowed everyone to set a fast pace. Leaders were able to average about 4:40 per mile. My average was about 5:40. At about 5 miles my right calf began cramping and I thought about slowing the pace a little,' but when I passed the 10 mile mark, I found that my average pace was still 5:40 per mile. ; I drank at each aid station and the short break felt good. Around 2 miles my left leg began cramping and from that point on until the end of the race, both legs were hurting, but not enough to quit Slowing down helped a ' little. THE CROWDS WERE getting larger and lined the roadway on both sides from Wellesley into Boston, Their cheering and enthusiasm helped take your mind off the physical problems. The crowds gave the women the loudest cheers. Spectators offered free orange slices and drinks all along the route. At about 18 miles comes the uphill part of the race, the Newton Hills, of which the last is "Heartbreak Hill." I held my position quite well during the hills, but lost a few places during this time. I had been passed by several hundred runners in the 5 miles just before the hills.
