Aircrews from both units fly Hercules aircraft into in the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico, to gather needed WC-13- 0 hurricanes, born weather data. storm reconnaissance The 1977 tropical storm season, which runs from June through November, is the 34th year of missions. The units provide storm surveillance of the Atlantic, Caribbean, Gulf of Mexico and the Pacific Coast. The units also track tropical storms off the U.S. coasts from Texas to Maine and California to Washington state. During the last eight years more than a dozen hurricanes have struck the United States. Hurricane Camille caused more than 300 deaths and more than a billion dollars' damage in 1969. Last year's Hurricane Belle killed one person. It also caused more than a billion dollars' damage to Long Island, N.Y., alone. Military and civilian weather observers and forecasters know that little can be done to lessen the force of nature's awesome summer storms. Nevertheless, they will U.S. join their efforts to give coastal regions early warnings of approaching storms. These early warnings are critical to preventing the loss of life in these regions, say weather officials. The officials add that the date obtained on the weather reconnaissance flights enable weather forecasters to make timely early warnings. (Taken from MAC News Service). (AFNS ) |
