The pert brownette snapped up her harness, put on her helmet, climbed into the back seat of her F-- 4 Phantom jet, legend in the 388th Tactical Fighter Wing at Hill AFB. Last Friday marked the first time that a woman has ever flown in an F-in the 388th. And as far as can be determined locally, it was a first in the Air Force. A1C Carol Fitts received the judges' vote for the top crew chief of the month in the 388th for June. Each month a top crew chief is picked and given a jet orientation ride, usually in the aircraft for which the crew chief is responsible. Carol's selection was the high point of a career for the airman who is from Sacramento, Calif. Admittedly a little nervous, Carol went through the detailed briefing about the flight, which was flown by Major Joe Highley. The major carefully explained the route, time in the air, emergency procedures and gave a watchful eye while the woman crew chief was fitted into her flying gear. Airman Houk will be presented a trophy and certificate at the annual Air Force Association convention to be held in September. v safety seminar slated July 16 for private pilots More than 1,300 private pilots throughout Utah are being invited to the second annual Civilian Aviation Fly- - In and Safety Seminar at Hill AFB, July 16. Purpose of the fly-i- n is to acquaint Utah's private pilots with flying military operations and promote flying safety.
