Show ) Page HILL TOP TIMES 18 October 22, 1976 HALL OF SPORTS In College football, Missouri certainly must be wondering why they can't beat the teams they are supposed to when they hold victories over two of the top ten yet have lost to two teams By Harry Hall The 1976 baseball season could very well be history as you read this column. It is interesting to note that the Cincinnati "Reds" and the New York Yankees met in two previous world series with the Yankees winning four straight in 1939. The "REDS" came back in 1940, beating the Detroit Tigers in an exciting seven games series for their last title before not rated in their class. We get to see them on Channel 4 at 1 p.m. this Saturday when they meet Nebraska. Tony Dorsett took advantage of Rickey Ball taking the week off and was named to the college "Backfield of the Week" for the fourth t?me this season. This is only 150 yards short of the e college rushing yardage record. Records were made to be broken and Archie Griffin's will only last one year. HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL High School football playoff time begins next week and may even see some teams having to meet to settle league positions. Region One played on Tuesday, this week and it looked as though Roy High would get the number one slot, but Bonneville needed a win over Bear River to clinch second. Bonneville held wins over Box Elder and Sky View and could have been selected even if they lost to Bear River. The second place team from Region One has to meet the third place team from Region Three for a quarter final State berth. Region Three was still in a dilema with four teams still having a chance for the three state berths. Let's hope no team has to play three games in one week as has happened in the 1975. The Yankees took four of five in 1961 when Ken Hunt, coach of the Morgan High Basektball team, pitched the last inning and struck out two Yankees as his team lost. Ken had arm trouble and pitched very little after that year. His 3 midyear record was instrumental in the first Cincinnati world series appearance in 21 years. Seldom has a team seemed as domineering as the Cincinnati team, yet they have only won two championships in 35 years. The New York Giants in 1921-2- 2 was the last National League team to win two world championships in a row. From 1920 through 1964, 45 years, the three New York City teams appeared in the World Series a total of 46 times. But in only 11 years during that time was New York City not a part of the World Series. all-tim- 9-- The Yankees won 16 of 18 world titles from i923 10 j958- - Their record of 20-- 9 will take a long time to catch. No wonder that names like "Babe" Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Vernon "Lefty" Gomez, Red Ruffing, "Whitey" Ford, Joe Dimaggio, Bill Dickey, "Yogi" Berra, Allie Reynolds, Mickey Mantle and perfect game winner, Don Larsen, were baseball heroes for years. Well, just maybe the "Reds" will be considered in the "Yankee"' class in a few more years. past. Happy deer hunting and see you next week. Monday night football is St. Louis and Washington. Base little league football ends The Wastach Front Little League football season ended last week with team banquets in the chapel 2 annex. Last Thursday a special potluck banquet was held for players, cheerleaders and families of the 85 pounder team, the "Steelers." Trophies were presented to cheerleaders, with special ones given to Jill Schneider, homecoming queen, and her attendants Michelle Cambria and Stephanie Davis. Heather Schrupp was voted 18 result. Miss Congeniality. Barbary Schneidewend, Margaret Costancio and all squad mothers were presented in figurines porcelain appreciation of their support during the season. Seventeen players received trophies and league patches and coaches Ken Brown, Terry Wilson and Tim Flynn each received bicentennial, autographed footballs. Little League basketball registration is now in process and will continue through tomorrow at the Youth Center. REJECT Region Four also had a strong possibility of a tie for first or second that would have to be resolved. In three-A- , Davis High has clinched a playoff spot and will open championship play next week. The quarterfinal schedule begins Thursday, Oct. 28 at the University of Utah with Region Four first places versus Region 2 second place at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Region one first place (Roy) meets Region three second place. On Friday, Oct. 29 at 11 a.m. Region Two first place Clearfield or Layton) meets the winner of the Region One second place and Region Three third place and at 1:30 p.m. Region three first place (Skyline) meets Region four second HI-COS- place. r II TS WORK for SAVINGS in COST REDUCTION PROGRAM 4-- A 2-- 5 game. Region Two could also have a problem if Ogden, Clearfield and Bountiful were all to win a three-wa- y tie for second would PRO FOOTBALL The Pro Football season moves along with the Pittsburgh Steelers sporting a 4 record. They have the other teams worried with their one game winning streak. Dallas finally joined the ranks of the beaten and only Minnesota has not lost, but has one tie. Franco Harris set a record bycarrying the ball 41 times for Pittsburgh. Admission price is $.25 for adults and $1.50 for students (Students $1.25 if purchased at their school.)
