Show HILL TOP TIMES October 22, 1976 . Page 7 Pedestrian, Driver apathy caused two injuries last month Two pedestrians were iniured in serjarate accident.? on Hill AFB during the past month. A Security Policeman, placing traffic cones on Southgate Drive, was hit from behind by a private motor vehicle making a left turn. The vehicle operator was reported to be watching for opposing traffic and failed to see the policeman in time to avoid striking him. Fortunately, only minor injuries resulted. In the second accident, a worker crossing Southgate Drive, in the crosswalk by building 264, was hit by a northbound private motor vehicle. Again, the driver was distracted by other traffic. In this case, a bus was pulling out into the traffic lane after discharging passengers. The individual was thrown 50 feet by the impact and suffered serious injuries. Both accidents occured between 3:30 and 4 p.m., during heavy afternoon rush-hou- r traffic and resulted from temporary driver distraction. The Ogden ALC Safety Office staff advises all personnel that pedestrian traffic across both Second Street and South Gate Drive during these periods is extensive and that pedestrians and vehicle operators appear to be more concerned about getting home than displaying required safety awareness to insure getting there without an accident. Some good tips from the Utah Drivers Handbook are Pedestrians have no right to leave a curb or other Dlace of safety and walk or run into the path of a vehicle which is so close that it is impossible for the driver to yield. Standing in a roadway to solicit a ride or other business from the driver of any vehicle is unlawful. Where sidewalks are provided, it is unlawful for any pedestrian to walk along and upon an adjacent roadway. Where sidewalks are not provided, pedestrians, when practical, should walk only on the left side of the roadway or its shoulder, facing traffic approaching from the opposite direction.
