Show Pafe HILL TOP TIMES 22 September 10, 1976 HALL OF SPORTS By Harry Hall Well, it's that time of year when sports fans must divide their attention or read all of the sporting offerings to keep up with what is going on. Baseball Race Tightens The major league races suddenly have become just that again with the Philadelphia Phillies dropping 10 of 11 and their cross-stat- e rival, the Pittsburgh Pirates have gained momentum with 12 of 13, as of the past weekend. It brings back memories of the New York Giants and Brooklyn Dodgers when the Dodgers lost a 13V2 game lead after the middle of August. The Phillies had a 15M game lead Aug. 24 and could become the biggest bust in baseball history. In the American League west, the Oakland A's are making a late move as Kansas City seems to be feeling the pressure. It all boils down to some interesting baseball for the remainder of the season. Pro Football On Tap The National Football League opens up this Sunday with the usual games televised each Sunday and the Monday night game which features Miami and Buffalo this Monday. The Dolphins appear to be one of the top teams again, although several of their Super Bowl stars have left the scene. Of course the favorite of most will be the 1975 and 1976 Super Bowl Champion Pittsburgh Steelers. We will see four months from now. As early as Oct. the Salt Lake Golden Eagles will open hockey play as they vie for some of the sports dollars, and of n course with hockey so close professional basketball be behind. can't far games 1 pre-seaso- Hunting, Fishing, Etc On the local football scene, all of the Utah colleges and universities get into action this weekend. The four major schools play away. Westminster College will open at home against Carroll College of Montana in Salt Lake City, 17th South and 13th East, this Saturday. High School Football League play begins for Region One high school teams this week with Roy High at Skyview as the key game. Both teams figure to finish high in the standings along with Bonneville High who meets Highland High of Pocatello, Idaho, tonight. Bonneville seems to be coming back from a rebuilding year and have shown a strong passing combo in quarterback Jeff Blackburn and Mike Mathieu-thr- ee TD's in two games. Skyview is the only undefeated team in Region One or Two. Speaking of winning records, Ogden High was the only Region Two team to win last week after being the only team to lose the first week. All six teams sport 1 records. 1-- Tight Race Expected Layton High and Viewmont seem to be the Region Two early season favorites but Clearfield, Ben Lomond, Bountiful and Ogden seem to have enough ability to make it a tight race. In Region One, Skyview, Roy and Bonneville appear to have the inside track on the two playoff spots but Box Elder has shown signs that they will be heard from. Weber seems to be rebuilding and haven't shown any strength. The Roy High passing combination of Jim McMahon to Sophomore Fred Fernandes sparkled again last week with a picture perfect pass play to end the first half. The final The margin of Roy's victory over Ben Lomond was losers also had a sterling pass combination in Rick Moore to Kevin Kunz-bo- th are just juniors. pre-seas- on 50-ya- rd 22-1- 6. Photochrome lenses unsafe Photochrome lenses can be a hazard in the industrial environment, safety officials warn. Photochrome lenses darken when exposed to bright light, such as sunlight, and lighten in dimmer lighting. The time involved for the photochrome lens to adjust to light is what presents a hazard, safety officials said. The change may take as long as 15 to 20 minutes after an employe comes in from outdoors, especially in bright sunlight. For that period a person is not going to be able to see as clearly as he should while starting to work. September safety talks by supervisors in Air Force Logistics Command will revolve around eyesight, and will touch on shaded as well as safety and contact lenses in an industrial environment.
