Show April 2. 1975 Weather Service Changes Like the phenomena it studies, the Military Airlift Command's Air Weather Service (AWS) seemed to be ever changing during the last half of 1975. During that six months it lost two wings, gained two wings, a squadron and a new commander. The first change came when the 6th Weather Wing (WW), Andrews AFB, Md., was inactivated Aug. 1 and its responsibilities were picked up by Air Force Global Weather Central (AFGWC) which became equivalent to a wing. Where the 6th WW had been, the 2nd Weather Squadron was reactivated. It became one of AFGWC's two major units. The other is the U.S. Air Force Environmental Technical Applications Center here. Exactly a month after it lost the 6th WW, the aerial weather reconnaissance and sampling mission was shifted to the Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Service. This was done by transferring the mission formerly done by the 9th Weather Reconnaissance Wing and its four squadrons. weather Aerial reconnaissance had been an . mission since 1942. The first unit to be added AWS after the loss of the two wings came on the first day of the new year, when the 7th WW was activated here.
