Show Page 10 HILL TOP TIMES April 2, 1976 Clearfield. Page 3 of your Mountain Bell phone book gives a clear picture of long distance calls. We are required by regulation to limit these toll calls to official business only. The rationale is sound. To allow personal calls to curtail official business calls would eventually require us to purchase more of these long distance lines; thus, we would be forced to spend public funds to accommodate private calls. This would certainly constitute an unjustified use of taxpayers' money. I realize that some of our people do place illegal personal calls over the Salt Lake City lines just as some people break the speed limit on Supervisors are responsible for insuring that their employes are aware of the illegality of these calls. If you would like detailed information about how the base telephone system works, please call Capt. Bradbury, 1881st Communication Squadron Commander at extension 2941. He is thoroughly familiar with the system and will be glad to explain it to you. nam L Answers to unpublished anonymous inquiries that are not printed in this column may be obtained by calling ext. 5305. If you have a question, comment, suggestion or problem you want to bring to my attention, dial "People Line," ext. 7000. Your remarks will be recorded 24 hours a day, staffed and a reply prepared. I or my vice commander will personally review those printed in this column. I am sincerely interested in the questions asked and the concerns expressed through the "People Line." It gives me the opportunity to explain why a certain decision was made or why a particular policy was implemented. In some cases, your questions might stimulate a review of or change in current procedures. Not all questions can be published, but a reply will be furnished to your question if you spell out your last name, add your initials, telephone number and organization. You may remain anonymous if you wish. KIWI M) A A. RAFALKO I would like to know why Hill AFB employes who live in Salt Lake or south of Hill AFB out of the direct dialing area are not allowed to use the Salt Lake line to call in without having to pay a toll charge when they want to report leave? I definitely think its discrimination because Ogden employes do not have to pay and it doesn't cost the government any more for that line than it does for the Ogden lines. A The fact of the matter is that it does cost us more for the Salt Lake City line than for the Ogden line. Our Ogden line is actually a Clearfield line working through the Clearfield exchange. The Salt Lake City line works through the Salt Lake Exchange. In the past we paid the usual toll fees on each official business call from and to Salt Lake City. As business increased, it was less expensive to rent full period circuits directly to the Salt Lake City exchange. Because the Salt Lake telephone exchange is several exchange areas distant to the Clearfield exchange, it is much more costlv for this service than service from Two-Doll- Bill ar bill which will Following are facts on the new two-dollbe in circulation as U.S. currency on April 13. 1976: ar Since we have been informed that we may be put on furlough during the last six working days of June, we are unable to schedule annual leave at that time. If we are not furloughed, will we be allowed leave without pay if we need it because we have scheduled our annual leave at As the AFLC announcement indicates a possibility of a furlough during the end of June, this would not preclude employes requesting annual leave for that time in the event the furlough was not necessary. However, if employes have scheduled and-o- r used all of their annual leave, the use of leave without pay is an administrative determination by management and depends on the circumstances in each individual case. A minimum of 30 days notice is required prior to actually placing employes on furlough. This should allow sufficient time for employes and supervisors to adjust leave schedules in the event alternate schedules have not already been submitted. Q A 7 would like to know if something can be done about the garbage around the dumpsters in Area C housing? We have turned in many complaints to Civil Engineering and the dumpsters are overloaded and garbage is left around them when they are full. Its very unsightly and unsanitary. We would like to know why this cannot be picked up and who is responsible to clean it up? Civil Engineering Sanitation Section is responsible for garbage pickup. Pickup is on Mondays and Fridays for Area C. If the dumpsters are full between these days, please call the Sanitation Section at extension 3477. Placing refuse outside the dumpster rather than in it is creating a major clean-u- p problem. I solicit all occupants in Area C housing to aid in combating this problem. Contents under pressure." Users are further cautioned not to puncture or incinerate these dangerous cans nor to expose them to heat or to store where the temperature goes above 120 degrees. AH too few people take the time to read this warning which appears on many commonly used household wodurts .such as hair spray. insecticide. paint and household disinfectant. Safety experts know these cans actually will explode like a bomb when they get too hot They know too that the propellant in these aerosol cans is highly volatile and will burst info flame when ignited by a spark, lighted cigarette or fire. One expert at Norton AFB. Calif.. frequently demonstrates this danger under carefully controlled conditions by directing aerosol hair spray across a small flame. This short burst of hair spray flashes like a flame thrower. Ordinarily, a volunteer firefighter should not sign up to answer routine calls during the hours he is scheduled to work. If he does, and he leaves his work to answer such a routine call, he can be charged leave. However, if he answers a call during nonduty hours and is prevented from reporting to work because the fire or other emergency condition has not been brought under control, his absence can be excused. Likewise, if a fire or other disaster was of such severity that a call was issued to all firefighters to report, the absence can be excused. If there is a possibility that the absence will begin during or extend into the normal duty hours, the employe is responsible for requesting approval from the immediate supervisor. Participation during duty hours by volunteer members of the local fire department in firefighting operations requires approval of excused absence by the ALC Commander. In order to obtain this approval, the employe is required to remind the head of the emergency operation, in this case the Chief of the Fire Department involved, to contact the Civilian Personnel Office at extensions 6142 or 5508 no later than the beginning of the workday following the emergency. Annual leave will be charged unless or until the Commander's approval is Since washers and dryers are nat furnished in base Q housing, are there any plans to build a laundromat on base? A There are no plans at the present time by either the Army and Air Force Exchange Service or the Base Civil Engineers to build a laundromat on base. Most residents of family housing have their own laundry equipment; therefore, even if construction money were available (which it is not), the low anticipated usage would not justify the overall expense. There are, however, several laundromats available in the local communities located in close proximity to the base (Clearfield, Roy, Layton, and Sunset). They are listed in the Yellow Pages of the Mountain Bell Telephone Book under Laundries - Self Service.
