'Flexibility' Key Word for Executive SecretarJ The mark of the executive secretary is built-i- n savoir faire, native or acquired. This Career Girl, Melba Hess, has it, whether at luncheon or holding down the desk outside Maj. Gen. Robert H. McCutcheon's office. With a solid secretarial background dating back to her graduation from Ogden High prior to the outbreak of World War II, Melba Hess came to Hill AFB in June, 1964. She took the position of secretary to the chief of the Computer Operation Branch of Data Automation Division. A little over three years later, in October, 1967, Miss Hess was chosen among 32 eligibles to be the executive secretary of Maj. Gen. Alan T. Bennett, commander of Ogden AMA. She commented: "When this happened, I realized that my previous concept of Ogden AMA would have to be expanded to include an understanding of the entire Air Force Logistics Command operation, and how all the organizations are coordinated." Miss Hess continued in the position as the commander's "right hand" after General McCutcheon replaced General Bennett, the latter retiring soon after her new assignment. Her administrative duties in the base's top secretarial post are varied and absorbing. She makes appointments, accomplishes research projects, and, of course, can take rapid dictation. Asked to describe the unique position, Melba said: "First of a!1, it is a stimulating and inspiring position to be in. If there is a qualification for the incumbent on this job, it is 'flexibility.' One has to meet sudden changing priorities that require immediate action. And of course I work hand-in-glowith the general's assistant." A review of this Career Girl's background will show why she was so well prepared to take over the responsibilities of this assignment. Her first secretarial work was on various Ogden city positions after high school, during which period she attended business college at night to improve her skills. Her first federal service came in 1942 with an appointment as at U.S. Civil Service Board No. 5 in Ogden. After a little over two years, in 1944, Melba applied to the American Red Cross, and was hired as executive secretary to the director of the Export Depot in San Francisco. Back in Ogden after the war she took a job as legal secretary at the U.S. Department of Agriculture. With one-wo- rd ve clerk-stenograph- er , " l If - Melba Hess legal experience behind her, Melba moved to Denver office of the Chief Attorney of Enforcement, Wage Stah? ization Board being on this appointment for a year oeptemuer, ivo. one transferred to the San Francisco of fice then and soon after accepted a more demanding posi' tion with the Antitrust Division of the Department of J Until 1957 she traveled throughout 11 Western states transcribing depositions and preparing summations of transcripts to be used in courtroom trials. On her return home to Ogden she was hired by the Marquart Corporation, and held various secretarial posts there for seven years before coming to Hill AFB. Miss Hess conc'uded: "I believe that I was meant to be an executive secretary actually no other type of job would satisfy me. The contacts one makes are fascinating, and the work rewarding." She has received a Sustained Superior Performance award. Melba Hess took voice training and has sung for many years in churches. The legitimate stage is her favorite entertainment. Meanwhile, the commander's office at Hill AFB is a pretty exciting place to spend a workday. t ft this month.
