Show HILL TOP TIMES Page 14 New VA Hazel Byrnes, a supervisory administrative specialist in Materiel Management, discovered some 17 years ago that she had an affinity for administration as well as for music. She had been a piano teacher for 10 years with several years of clerical experience in Ogden firms when she came to Hill AFB in 1952. She soon rose from a GS-- 2 clerk-typi- st in Administrative Services to a GS-- 5 editorial clerk, and then to management analyst. In this capacity she transferred to the Logistics Systems Management Division of Materiel Management. In 1961 the Data Products Division was formed in this directorate, and Mrs. Byrnes was placed in the new division, becoming a section chief the next year. She now supervises 12 people administrative specialists, clerical assistand librarians in the Tech Publications library and ants, AFB, Tex. Air Force consoli- dated personnel offices have been advised of a new Veterans Administration procedure for converting Servicemen's Group Life Insurance using: a new VA pamphlet and the armed forces separation form (DOD Form 214). All Air Force members are to be advised that within 30 days after release from active duty, they should receive from the VA a list of authorized insurance companies. The member has 120 days after his release date to convert to an individual policy with any of the companies on the VA list. It is emphasized that it is the member's responsibility to contact the insurance company regarding individual policy provisions, application procedures, and premiums. If the member does not receive the list of companies within 30 days after release, or additional information is desired, he should write: Office of Servicemen's Group Life Insurance, 212 Washington Street, Newark, N.J. 07102.' the Administrative Publications library. "I had planned to go to college and become an English teacher," Hazel recounted. "But that didn't materialize, and I went to business college instead and learned office skills. I had always like writing, and of course, kept up with music. I played the piano and organ for teas, weddings and fashion shows, altogether for about 28 years, besides 'being a church organist. "But I feel that my real career started at Hill AFB when I passed examinations and began to get assignments in the administrative field." The Administrative Support Section in which Hazel is supervisor administers the publications, Incentive Awards, Suggestions, security, correspondence management, and publicity programs for the directorate. In addition, the section monitors the directorate blood donor program, mail distribution, and all fund-raisin- g campaigns. The most challenging area of Hazel's assignment, she said, is the directorate publications program, which produces the operating instructions and regulations. Writing is a considerable part of her work. The excellence with which this Career Girl dispatches her administrative chores is attested to by her having re- - THE MAN WHO first said "A penny for your thoughts", obviously had never paid for psychoanalysis. Hazel's favorite outside interest is the Litra Chimes Literary Club to which she has belonged for almost 30 years. The chief interest of its members is book reviews, but it is a truly social group whose ladies have been friends most of their lives. She is also a member of the Hill Administrative Club. She and her husband, John, live at 2035 W. 5300 S., Roy. They have a daughter, Beverly, and four grandchildren!
