Show Page 52 HILL TOP TIMES COST REDUCTION Airmen May Get Retreading Aircraft Tires Saves Millions Two aircraft tire retreadiner programs directed by the Ogden Air Materiel Area will save the Air Force $1,755,700 this fiscal year. Millions more are expected as long as the aircraft remain in the inventory. Maj. Gen. T. Alan Bennett, Ogden AMA commander, identified the tires as those used on the eight-j2 bomber and the four-engijet transport. New tires on the size 56x16, cost the Air Force $281 each and the huge bomber uses eight of them. Previously when the tread was worn off the carcas was discarded. The uses eight tires, size 44 x 16, and each tire costs $182. Like the 2 tire, it was discarded when there was no tread left. Conducted Study General Bennett said that the landing gear and trainer equipment division and the service - engineering division conducted a retread study on tires used on both aircraft. Thompson Tire Co., San Francisco, and Goodrich Tire Co., Akron, Ohio, were selected to B-5- et C-1- 41 ne B-5- 2, develop the retreading process using specifications developed by Ogden AMA. In both cases the retreading process proved successful. Reand treading of 2 tires are bid out to various tire companies on a competitive basis. Cost of retreading a 2 tire averages $102 and $67 for a tire.
