Generating more than one million pounds of thrust, the huge rocket shot a cylinder flame across barren slopes as 288,000 pounds of fuel blazed a glaring orange-whit- e for more than 70 seconds. More than 100 military, industry, civic and press visitors watched the firing from a hillside. Air Force and Thiokol officials in a said that the test was "very successful" and that a complete of valuable data was obtained all good. "There were no abnormalities," they said. Demonstration Test de-briefi- ng The Friday test was primarily intended to demonstrate the feasibility of using a steel, re-i- nf orced, flexible rubber bearing in its thrust directional control system. Efforts Made The Thiokol Wasatch Division efforts on the large motors are being made under contract to the Air Force Rocket Propulsion Lab with overall programs directed by the Space Systems Division, Los Angeles, Calif. Attending the test firing from this division were: Col. Eugene Finke, director Air Force Large Solid Rocket Motor programs, Space Systems Divisions; Capt. John Schmuck and Capt. John Frishett. Finke commended Colonel Thiokol officials for the "work and effort that went into a firing such as the one today."
