Emphasis Put On Water Safety Program at materiel nu May IV CLASS a m p 1957, 1958 8 1959 Use Your Head to Make Holiday Happy With a weekend here and weather at its three-da- y nicest, spring the highways seem to extend a special invitation to us all. Memorial Day Monday is a day when almost everyone journeys back to the old hometown to pay honor and tribute to his departed loved ones. It's a time of getting together with one's families it's a time of reunion with relatives it's a time of remembering. BUT it's also a time of DANGER and it can be a time of TRA- GEDY. The Safety Council is warning that increased highway traffic will increase chances for accident. They are predicting that hundreds of lives will be lost and thousands of persons will be injured on the nation's highways. You are the only one who can help stop this prediction from coming true. How can you help? By obeying all the ground rules for safe driving. For instance: don't speed, obey traffic signs, don't drink and drive, don't drive when you're tired, be, a courteous driver. There are several other areas, for special cautiousness during the next three days. If you go swimming over the holiday, be sure to If you go picknicking, be on guard against practice water-safetfood poisoning, insect and and snake bites, and sunburn. Just follow common sense safety rules and your forthcoming holiday can be a happy one. y. Still Time to Sign Up bond States The annual United savings campaign Is still in progress at Hill AFB and there's still time to increase your deductions or sign up for bonds. Civilian bond participation is currently over 90 percent, but the goal is to raise this participation higher. If you haven't been contacted by a key worker, see your supervisor. Bonds are better than ever now because of increased interest rates and longer extension periods. Snecial emphasis was given the water safety program at Hill AFB at a recent meeting conducted by the Ground Safety division. Announcement that both swim- mine rjools at Hill, AFB will be opened this weekend added special significance to the matter of water safety. Representatives from all mili tary organizations at Hill AbB and special services met and discussed the water safety program as outlined in a new regulation issued by the Air Force. Water sports rank second as a cause of accidental deaths, the reg ulation points out. Only motor vehicles cause more accidental deaths of Air Force personnel in ground activities. Most of the fatalities by drown ing occur while Air Force personnel are swimming, boating, or fish ing. Although inadequate supervi sion and unsafe facilties are often at fault, such drownings are caused primarily by individual failures in ability, attitude, knowledge, or judgment. To eliminate these human and environmental deficiencies and save lives, a continuing program of instruction and training in wa ter safety will be conducted at Hill AFB. The educational program will emphasize safe practices in swim ming, boating, and other water sports. It will also include precautions against the hazards of swimming alone; swimming at an unapproved location; diving into water with out checking its depth, or- for underwater obstructions; mishandling or overloading a boat; and other hazardous practices which may result in death or serious injury. the base under close observation program. equipment under t THERE are bigger thing, money.
