Miss Narury Jean Shurtlifi Is Engaged Mr. and Mrs. Richard B. Shurtliff, St. George, and formerly of Hinckley, Hinck-ley, Utah announce the engagement engage-ment and forthcoming marriage of their daughter, Nancy Jean Shurtliff, Shurt-liff, to Dick G. Winterton, son of Mr. and Mrs. Grant Winterton of Heber, Utah. The couple has set a June 8 wedding date. The future bridegroom is a graduate grad-uate of Dixie Jr. College, at St. George, where he was student body president. He is a former student of Utah State University and has served a two year tour of duty with the armed forces. The bride-elect is attending Dixie Dix-ie Jr. College, where she is active in student activities. SUNSHINE CLUB The first meeting of the new year was held at the home of Madge Christensen, with eleven members present. After a brief resume re-sume of the past year, the club is proud to report that it was the first to donate money to the Hospital Hos-pital Fund rather than sending out Christmas cards. New officers elected at this meeting meet-ing were Catherine Riding, President; Presi-dent; Lydia Evans, Vice President; and Lu Pearson, Secretary. The hostess served lovely refreshments. The next meeting will be at the home of Tekela Dekker, Thursday, Thurs-day, January 29, 2:30 p.m. CARD OF THANKS The relatives of Axel M. Johnson John-son wish to extend a sincere "thank you" to all who assisted in the funeral services, for the beautiful flowers and a special "thank you" to the Oasis Relief Society for the very fine lunch which they served. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Miller and daughter, Margaret, and Mr. and Mrs. Claud Warner, Provo, visited with Mr. and Mrs. Layton Bishop Saturday. The afternoon was spent in singing and visiting. Ted Miller, son of Mr. and Mrs. Miller, had labored in the same LDS mission Field as Mr. and Mrs. Bishop. Mr. and Mrs. Bishop have just recently recent-ly returned to the States from the Hawaiian mission field. Asantas I. Mikoyan. the Kremlin's Krem-lin's second most important man, has more to his credit than three Orders of Lenin he put American ice cream on the Russian menu. Mikoyan, who is the only member mem-ber of the Soviet hierarchy to visit vis-it the U. S., arrived in New York on Jan. 4 for a two week tour. But he got his first taste of American ice cream in 1936, when he came to the U. S. for three months as the head of an industrial indust-rial survey team. According to the research department depart-ment of The World Book Encyclopedia, Ency-clopedia, he went home with American Am-erican techniques of canning, meat packing, food freezing and ice cream making. Since then, the typically American Ameri-can treat has become a Russian favorite. Robert Neil Spong and his bride, the former Miss Ardella Christen-; sen, greeted friends at the reception recep-tion in their honor Saturday nighl, Jan. 10, in Oak City. Their marriage was solemnized Jan. 9, in the Salt Lake Temple. The impressive ceremony was performed per-formed 'by Elder Eben R. Blonquist, and attended by fourteen relatives and friends. Mrs. Spong is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Willard R. Christensen, of Oak City, and resided in Salt Lake at 777 East 6th South. Mr. Spong is a son of Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Spong, of Ogden, Utah. After the ceremony luncheon for the wedding party was served at Harmon's Cafe on North Temple, in Salt Lake, hosted by parents of the bridegroom. Sixteen guests attended. at-tended. For the reception the bride was lovely in a floor-length 'gown of white satin, with chantilly lace for the delicate winged collar and to cover the fitted bodice and long tapered sleeves, and for the dainty overskirt. Her elbow-length veil of nylon illusion was held by a tiara of pearl beads. Her bouquet was pink rose buds and white carnations, carna-tions, encircled in lace and white satin ribbons. Miss Hazel Christensen, of Oak City, sister of the bride, was maid of honor. Her gown was of baby blue taffeta, princess ' style, and she carried a nosegay of pink and white carnations. Bridesmaids were Miss Rush Ras mussen, Miss Mary Scheid and Miss Karien Baren, all of Salt Lake City. They wore princess styled taffeta dresses of sky blue, and carried nosegays of pink and white carnations. carna-tions. Mr. Fred W. Spong, of Berkely, Calif., stood as best man for his brother. Featured was the three-tiered wedding cake, separated on pillars, pil-lars, and beautifully decorated with pink roses, lace work, silver leaves and bluebirds. The new Mr. and Mrs. Spong are now residing at 722 El Camino Way, Palo Alto, Calif., where Mr. Spong is employed as an electrical engineer by General Electric Co. He was graduated with high honors hon-ors from U. of U., College of Electrical Elec-trical Engineering, with a Bachelor of Science Degree, and was elected to the honor society of Tau Beta Pi. Pie-nuptial parties in Sail Lake lot the biide were showers given by Mrs. A. T. Scheid and Miss Mary Scheid and Mrs. Richard Jorgenson. Mrs. Richard W. Christensen entertained enter-tained for the bride at a party for ten guests. Bs lletrothed Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Van Bishop announce the engagement of their daughter, Dorothy Ruth, to Mr. A. Duane Griffin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Archie Griffin, of Boise, Idaho. The bride-to-be is a graduate N - - J IK 1 . WWW :. w Miss Dorothy Ruth Bishop of C.S.U. and Utah State University. Univer-sity. She filled an LDS mission in the Samoan Islands and is now teaching school in Murray, Utah. The prospective bridegroom is a graduate of Boise Jr. College, and University of Idaho. He received his Masters Degree from the BYU, and is now teaching music in the Meridian, Idaho School District. He has also filled an LDS mission in the Samoan Islands. An early June wedding is being planned. LADY LIONS HOLD MEETING The Lady Lions met Wednesday, Jan. 14, at Hatch's Cafe. After the dinner and a brief business discussion, discus-sion, led by Pres. Harriet Eliason, the Lions joined the ladies for the program. New members of the club gave the following program: Vocal solo, Joyce Long; Sentiment; Dorothy Gardner; Vocal solo, Elaine All-red; All-red; Reading, Doneta Hardy. Twenty-six Lady Lions were present. pre-sent. Committee in charge were Verna Walch, Hannah Eliason and Doneta Hardy. After the weekend in Delta Miss Steele returned Sunday evening to Salt Lake, where she teaches at Irving Junior High School. HOMEMAKERS Homemaker's Club will meet on Monday, Jan. 26 at the County Office. Of-fice. The program will get underway under-way at 8:00 p.m., under the direction direc-tion of the City Fire Dept., and will be on Home Fire Prevention. Everyone Every-one is invited to attend. - t f ' S Miss Dorothy Tolbert Engaged to Wed Making wedding plans are Miss Dorothy Tolbert and Bryce Knight. Announcement of their engagement, engage-ment, to wed is made this week by parents of the bride-elect, Mr. and Mrs. Sherman Tolbert, of Abraham. Mr. Knight is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Newell Knight, of Deseret. Dorothy and Eryce are both seniors sen-iors at Delta High School, and will be graduated this year. Colleen Gillen had Patricia Hun-saker, Hun-saker, from Delta, with her over the weekend. Mrs. Frank Lyman, representing he Stake Relief Society, joined us Tuesday in our meeting. In our Sacrament meeting Sunday Sun-day night we had the privilege of listening to Layton and Fontella Bishop give a report of their mis-;ion mis-;ion in the Hawaiian Islands. Beth Day and Glenda Roundy sang two songs: "My Testimony," and "Bless This House." Clark Bishop gave a short talk. The meeting was under the direction of Clark Bishop. BRIDGADIERS ENTERTAINED Mrs. Nona Chesley was hostess to Bridgadiers and guests Thursday night, at dinner at Hatch's City Cafe, and bridge later at the Chesley Ches-ley home. Present were Liz Pace, Cora Day Mabel Warnick, Gwen Carrol, Men-ee Men-ee Moody, Freda Whicker, Betty Baker, Lola Farnsworth, Callie Morrison, Mor-rison, Rita Ticer, members, and Norma Pearson and Helen Baker, guests. He is a son of Ed and Ruth MeClellan Theobald, of Delta, weighed 6 lbs. 1 oz., and is their fourth child. Other grandparents grand-parents are Mr. and Mrs. Alton Theobald, of Hinckley. Mr. and Mrs. Richard Dewsnup, of Salt Lake, were weekend visitors visit-ors with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Les Welton, Delta, and Mrs. Ruth Dewsnup, Deseret. FIDELITY CLUB ENTERTAINED Inez Moody was hostess to the Fidelity Club members Thursday night at her home. A lovely dinner was served to twelve members, after which Mr. Joe Snow entertained the group with a discussion on Current Events,' which was very interesting and enjoyable. Those present were Romania Bird, Clara Killpack, Dorothy Gardner, Gard-ner, Ora Gardner, Zola Wright, Ava Starley, Verna Gardner, Donna Sorenson, Leatha Bennett, Thelma Black, Ella Black, Inez Moody and Mr. Joe Snow. Mrs. Anita Crawford and Mrs. Madge Christensen spent Tuesday and Wednesday in Salt Lake City. Mrs. Christensen visited her brother, broth-er, Agnor Rollins, recovering from surgery at the Veteran's hospital. Mrs. Wanda Beckwith and children, child-ren, Susan, Mary Jane, Deborah, and Frank Collins, made a trip to Salt Lake City for the weekend. U.E.A. Leadership School at Kanab Sebrina Ekins A Leadership School sponsored by the Utah Education Association Associa-tion was held in Kanab, Utah, on January 15, 16 and 17. Six delegates chosen to attend from Millard County school district dist-rict include Principal Rosslyn Ep-pich, Ep-pich, president of Millard County Teachers Association; Ben H. Rob-ison, Rob-ison, Regional P.T.A. president, Jack Fowles, chairman of salary and contracts committee; Sebrina Ekins, Millard County Adult Education Edu-cation director, from West Millard, and LaZell Borg, supervisor Elementary Ele-mentary Education, and Mr. Oleen Hatch, vice president of MCTA of Fillmore. Dr. Leland P. Bradfield, Director of Adult Education services of the National Education Association, was the consultant. The school was opened with a dinner at the Community Hall at C p.m., Thursday. The Kane County Education Association As-sociation were hosts on conducted tour of Glen Canyon Dam for delegates del-egates on Saturday afternoon, following fol-lowing the adjournment of the school. In our schools today it has been found that achievement is the result re-sult of group effort. For this purpose pur-pose Leadership Schools were organized or-ganized by the U.E.A. organization, which should result in some fine action for the betterment of our schools and communities.
