After losing just one game in the other three rounds, the Vikings took on defending state champions Lone Peak again, for the second straight year. The Knights outlasted Pleasant Grove 25-23, 25-21, 12-25, 27-29, 15-10. Like last November, they finished second in the playoffs. In reflecting on the Vikings' Region 7 loss at the Knights' gym, Daniel said, "The game at Lone Peak was our worst contest this year." The Vikings wanted to use the title game as a means for'redeeming themselves, them-selves, but they didn't get off to a great start in the match. The contest opened with Knight Christie Carpenter hammering the ball into a hole on the Viking front row. Thornton guided the Vikings out to a 2-1 lead. A Paige Palmer kill tied the game at two and sent the Knights out to a 9-4 lead. The crowds for both sides stayed pretty animated throughout the match. Kills by Anna Lott and Jackie Fotu kept the Knights at least four points ahead. A double block empowered the Vikings to march repeatedly within one point. A Breanne Winger block and a Tela Burnett tip tied the score at 21 and 22 respectively. However, the Vikings couldn't could-n't slip ahead. The second game started with a 6-1 lead for Lone Peak on Palmer and Ashley Hamilton blocks. JaNae Mortensen guided the Vikings within 4-6, but a service error stalled the Viking comeback. With Knights blocking off Hailey Barner, Kortney Robinson and Hailey Jepp-son, Jepp-son, Lone Peak went on a 6-0 6-0 scoring run. A Robinson kill sparked another Viking rally, but it got hampered by Hamilton's blocking and Lott's hitting. Through lobbing two aces, Thornton guided the Vikings within 13-17, but until the second game's final minutes, Lone Peak didn't let Pleasant Grove get any closer than four points. Wilson led a rally that reduced the Knight lead down to 21-22. A Lott kill stopped the Vikings from tying the game, and two Pleasant Grove hitting errors gave the Knights the win. Though the third game opened with the Vikings taking a 1-0 lead on a block, Lone Peak raced ahead 4-1. Through her serving, Thornton put the Vikings ahead 12-4 during an 11-0 scoring run. It so startled the Knights that they couldn't could-n't recover from it despite good blocks by Hamilton and Fotu. Robinson led the way in creating a double-digit lead for the Vikings. With the ending in a 13-point win for them, the Vikings felt confident confi-dent about their chances in the fourth game. Robinson kills sent the Vikings rolling out to a 5-1 lead in game 5. This time, the Knights weren't so shell-shocked like they were in the prior game. A Christina Christi-na Evans block stirred up a Knight rally. The Knights soon tied the game at seven. A seesaw battle ensued. The Knights' last chance for taking the fourth game arose when a Fotu kill tied the game at 27. Pleasant Grove broke the tie, and a Barner kill forced a fifth game. Breaking a 1-1 tie on a Lindsey Riley kill, the Knights charged out to a 4-1 4-1 lead. Hamilton and Lott frustrated the Vikings with frequent blocks. After tying the game at 10, the Vikings seemed certain cer-tain that they would win the championship trophy this time. However, a Carpenter Car-penter kill broke the tie, and the Knights went on to clinch a second straight championship trophy. Daniel said, "It is kind of sad for us. It's like we paid for a full movie and missed the last two minutes of it. We finish our season with 23-3 record. Eight-five percent per-cent of the time tonight, we were playing well. "Thornton had 25 aces," he said. i : U f -", v -'I. y f , , 1 " ' .in., v., W'-1t w"",wi' m ) m ... v" '.-"'-"''.i "mm ''I " : : .'.. f - . . ' ' , .. . . , t , i V - ; y j -, i : . The Pleasant Grove volleyball team put on a great show during the championship match. (Upper left) Setter Allyce Wilson passes the ball as Tela Burnett goes up to make the kill attempt. The powerful Vikings were ranked all season sea-son long and will be one of the favorites again next year as they lose only two seniors, Thornton and Breanne Winger.
