Utah County commissioners commission-ers voted 2-1 Tuesday against a proposal to carve out the Lehi High School area from the Alpine School District, into a district of its own. The school portion of property prop-erty taxes was estimated to increase 40 percent in the proposed district by 2010, if the split was approved. Last year, sponsors submitted sub-mitted a petition with more than 1,200 signatures of vot- ers in the Lehi area who wanted the school district split. The county appointed a committee to study the feasibility feasi-bility of the district. The committee com-mittee finished its report recommending against the split in June. Then commissioners com-missioners opened a 45-day public comment period, which ended more than a week ago. Rep. David Cox, R-Lehi, was not happy with the It will' probably happen in the future, but I don't think the split would be appropriate appro-priate (now). The decision Tuesday doesn't change his position, even though that position has probably hurt his re-election chances. He's willing to make changes to the legislation, legisla-tion, to make the process more clear. Cox sponsored the legislation legisla-tion 'that allows for school districts to split, was one of the sponsors of the petition to split the district, and sat on the committee that studied the feasibility of the split He also teaches 5th grade m Lehi's Sego Lily Elementary School. "We can't keep growing," he said, of (the Alpine School District. "Tjiere has got to be a point, there has got to be some way to do this." He's worried that the Alpine School District won't be able to get the necessary votes to build new schools in the Lehi area, and Lehi students stu-dents will end up being bused to Orem schools.
