The Vikings celebrate after a home run empties the Pleasant Grove bench. By Todd Veenker Sports Correspondent The Pleasant Grove baseball base-ball team managed a split this past week in their region schedule with an 0- 5 loss at Timpanogos April 21 and an 8-4 victory over Mountain View at home Friday. Despite the defeat by the T-wolves, the Vikings are within a game of the second-place Bruins. At Timpanogos, the Vikings could not find an answer for the T-Wolves' Mac Nelson, who pitched a gem of a game and kept the Pleasant Grove lineup off balance all afternoon. After falling into a 5-0 hole through three innings of play, the Vikings missed an opportunity to get back in the game in the top of the fourth inning. Christian King managed a single to start the fourth inning. King advanced to second base on a fielding error by the Timpanogos defense. Devin Walker then advanced King to third and Kyler Drew to second with a big single, but Timpanogos stiffened and didn't allow the Vikings to get on the scoreboard. Following the bases-loaded bases-loaded fourth inning, Pleasant Pleas-ant Grove could only manage man-age one more hit, a double by Jordan Smith, for the rest of the game. Timpanogos Timpano-gos positioned themselves securely atop the region standings with the victory and ended the Vikings' three-game win streak. Two days later Pleasant Grove was back home and ready to get back to their winning ways. After an embarrassing defeat earlier at Mountain View, the Vikings needed a home win against a Bruin team that was hoping to stay within a game of Timpanogos. The Bruins jumped ahead with a run in the second sec-ond inning and another in the top of the fourth, but Pleasant Grove sophomore pitcher Sterling Turley was doing a great job of keeping the Vikings within striking distance. In fact Turley did not allow another run until Pleasant Grove was well ahead of Mountain View. Pleasant Grove got on the scoreboard in the bottom bot-tom of the fourth inning. Kyler Drew reached base thanks to a fielder's choice. Two batters later, Jordan Smith's double drove Drew across the plate. In the fifth inning, every Viking batter made contact with the ball, which produced pro-duced a seven-run rally. Pleasant Grove showed great patience at the plate to begin the inning. Four of the first five batters managed man-aged to reach base via walks, and the fifth batter was hit by a Bruin pitch. Then Christian King cleared the bases with a grand slam, which caused a Mountain View pitching change. Later in the fifth, a Walker Walk-er double was followed by a Jordan Smith home run, and as quickly as the Bruins Bru-ins had built a 2-0 lead, the Vikings had jumped out to (Villi i5T":-?irm5r:- -:m , 4 Photo by Kent Davis Viking first baseman Erin Glazier stretches to make a catch for an out on the Knights. Not until Turley had tired in the sixth inning did the Bruins manage two more runs, but Ryan Kendall came in with one out in the sLxth and quickly finished off Mountain View for the victory. On Tuesday the Vikings traveled to Orem for their third and final meeting with the Tigers. A victory against the one-win Tigers would keep Pleasant Grove within a game of Mountain View and even with Lone Peak for the third seed from the region. At Pleasant Grove's rodeo grounds April 20, Orem shut out the Vikings 12-0. In a non-league non-league game in Mount Pleasant Thursday, North Sanpete edged Pleasant Grove 7-6. In the Orem game, Viking coach Jeff Wilson said, "We lost out on errors. We didn't put things together togeth-er defensively. They Orem had only four runs. The rest of their runs came on errors. If we had cut down on our errors, we could have had a better chance at coming com-ing back. "Our defense just wasn't good. We shot ourselves in the foot." The Vikings made eight errors in the course of their shutout loss. Wilson said, "We did hit the ball good. We just weren't hitting it into the holes. We weren't able to capitalize on our hits." Orem pitcher Devrie Downey held the Vikings to three hits for the afternoon. Orem took a 3-0 lead in the first inning. The next, inning, Marsha Heimuli hit a grand slam off pitcher McKell Wilson. Orem picked up a run in the third, and in the fifth, a four-run rally caused the game to be called that inning. In the April 22 game, Coach Wil son said, "North Sanpete had no earned runs.
