It was the team's highest-ever finish. girls lose to top five teams By Dean Von Memmott Sports Correspondent The Pleasant Grove Vikings dropped two girls' basketball games in Region 7 action last week. At home Feb. 4, the nationally-ranked nationally-ranked Mountain View Bruins Bru-ins defeated Pleasant Grove 74-44. At Tiger Field House Feb. 6, state-ranked Orem overpowered the Vikings 70-51. The two losses put Pleasant Pleas-ant Grove in a three-way fight with Lone Peak and ":-' i u. ii ii.. ijij. . .. wiiv.i),w., 1 1 . VX '7-4 V. Senior Tricia Burton shields the ball. Timpanogos for the league's third and final state playoff spot. In the Mountain View game, Heather Hansen's highly accurate shooting enabled the Bruins to build a 28-6 lead over Pleasant Grove in the first quarter. By halftime, Mountain View's lead grew to 45-15. Led by Candace Johnson, Lauren Francom, and Cort-ney Cort-ney Johnson, the Vikings matched the Bruins point for point in the second half, but it was already too late for the Vikings to bounce back. Francom led Pleasant Grove with seven points. Cortney and Candace Johnson each addded another anoth-er six points. In the Orem game, Candace Johnson hit a trey, then an inside set shot to give the Vikings a 5-0 lead. Orem trimmed it to 5-3 on foul shots from Heather Keith and Chelsoy Hill. Two three-pointers from Tina Mangum stretched the Viking lead to 11-6, offsetting offset-ting damage done by Tiger Tiffany Peterson's sinking a layup on a steal. Aided by a Marsha Heimuli trey, Keith sank two foul shots that left the score tied at 11 when the first quarter expired. In pulling ahead 1.3-11 on two Melodi Green foul shots the next quarter, Orem turned the game into a seesaw see-saw fight. The lead traded hands twice in the quarter. Once a Francom layup put the Vikings ahead 18-17, two Brittani Sevy foul shots tightened their hold on the lead. Pleasant Grove soon stretched its advantage to 22-17. Peterson trimmed it to 22-21 through sinking a field goal and two foul shots. The Tigers blew their chance at regaining the first-half lead through lobbing lob-bing a bad pass and drawing draw-ing an offensive foul. Buckets Buck-ets by Whitney Fox and Ashlie Giles gave the Vikings a 26-23 lead at the break. Unfortunately, that marked the end of good times for them during the game. The second half opened with Orem pulling ahead 26-25 on Keith's scoring scor-ing four unanswered points. As soon as the Tigers had established a 30-26 lead, the Vikings made a brief charge. Two Candace Johnson John-son foul shots enabled Francom to tied the game at 30, but two Aubrey Stay foul shots opened a 15-5 scoring run for the Tigers in the third period's final four minutes. With the Vikings having been held to nine points in the third quarter, fourth period 3-pointers from Candace Can-dace Johnson and Danielle Sargent pushed the Vikings within 46-11, but Orem kept them from getting any closer. The Tigers' incredibly accurate foul shooting made certain of that. Candace Johnson led Pleasant Grove with 16 points while Giles added eight and Francom six. Keith led the Tigers with 21 points while Heimuli added 14 and Peterson 13. The Vikings wrap up region play this next week as they host Timpanogos tonight and visit Lone Peak on Tuesday. Girls swim team highest-ever stag By Dean Von Memmott Sports Correspondent Even though the Pleasant Pleas-ant Grove Vikings didn't win any events at state 4A swim meet, held Feb. 7-8 at Brigham Young University, their swimmers kept placing plac-ing high enough in most races to net them a second-place second-place girls' trophy. This was the highest that a Pleasant Grove girls' team had finished at a state swim meet. To earn this privilege, Pleasant Grove had to beat American Fork by two points. While the Mountain Crest Mustangs swam away with the girls' title, the Vikings still had much to be proud about. Viking coach Melissa Thompson said, "It was such a close race between us and AF for second. sec-ond. We're quite excited about having placed so high this year. We knew we could do very well. "Our girls have (practiced (prac-ticed and competed) a lot with the kids from American Ameri-can Fork and Lone Peak, so they knew what swimmers from those other schools were capable of doing. It just came down to who was going to fight harder," she said. "We are going to be losing Annette Johnson (to graduation), gradu-ation), but we do hope our second-place finish will inspire many other girls to come out for the program" Johnson finished second in the 200-yard freestyle I. and third the 200 ul mediae5 t00k William, tookfourti'e: PIm- ,n ond in tval freestyle fj, yard fr,,;:t relays i'P- Jordan,Eil.y These fin;;-..' p to Please and both b-school b-school rearjr Jordan it points ffjr, ie a 7th iu; freestyle .: the 100-p..l( The v'l.' relay tea -dan, At Stephanie : ley Hfcil fc" on the firr . tion, eno-- margin of j victory. .
