Volunteers needed at literacy centers You can make a difference differ-ence in the lives of children and adults who are looking look-ing to improve their reading read-ing level by becoming a tutor with the Family Literacy Centers of Utah County. "The froal is to get the students reading at their grade level," comments Rachel McOmber, volunteer volun-teer coordinator for the Family Literacy Centers. This must be accomplished both at home and at the local literacy center. Currently, the Family Literacy Centers are seeking seek-ing individuals to volunteer volun-teer to teach basic literacy skills to both parents and . children. "Our tutors are wonderful, wonder-ful, but we could always use more. It's always such a joy to see the interaction between the tutors and the students," comments Marilyn Cowley. Director of Orem Literacy Center. "As a child's reading improves, every subject in school is effected. This program changes the life of the tutor as well as the student's." Each tutor is paired with a specific student and is able to set study sessions between 1 and 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday. The Family Literacy Center prefers a six to nine month commitment, in order to provide stability to the student, but will also consider tutors who would like to serve for three cr more months. r The United Way Volunteer Center is the community connection to volunteer activities, enabling Utah County residents resi-dents to help those who need it most.
