Graduation took a major swipe at Coach Bill Mikelson's starting lineup on both sides of the ball. If the question of who will take the field for Pleasant Grove isn't enough, a new question has been added to the list this year: who are these teams the Vikings are playing? Due to realignment and reclassification, Pleasant Grove joins Lone Peak from their old region to butt heads with former 5A schools Timpanogos, Orem and Mountain View. With so few teams in the region, every 'game will weigh even more heavily on the standings stand-ings and tournament brackets. brack-ets. ; ' As for the original question ques-tion about the Viking personnel, per-sonnel, the easy answers comd in the form of previous experience. Headlining the returning column will be seniors Nic Woodhouse and Ty Lewis, who were groomed last season to take their place as the leaders of this season's team. Look for Woodhouse and Lewis to see plenty of time on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. To compliment the speed and agility of Woodhouse and Lewis will be the size "a J! A Pleasant Grove quarterback drops back for a handoff Vikings open soccer campaign with AF By Dean Von Memmott Sports Correspondent With six seniors back from last year's girls' soccer team, the Pleasant Grove Vikings will open their home season against the American Fork Cavewomen in a 3:30 p.m. contest tomorrow. Coaching them this year is ' Jose Marzan, fresh from having coached the Lone Peak Knight boys to the quarterfinals of last spring's Estate;, soccer playoffs! play-offs! ' He said, "Coaching girls is different from coaching boys. Boys have aggressiveness.; aggressive-ness.; Girls are more sensitive. sensi-tive. -You have to appeal to them differently." In having to work on a different approach in getting get-ting this year's Vikings to do their best, Marzan said, "We're going to be placing an emphasis on having a good defense. We're doing that, because the girls have not won many games in the past few years." Marzan has a special reason to stress defense. Jordan Peterson will assume the role Of quarterback quarter-back this year after waiting his turn, behind graduated senior Cory Fralick. Peterson brings size to the quarterback position with his 6'4" frame. Important to Peterson's success will be protection from his front line as the youngster adjusts to the speed of varsity var-sity action. "Mountain View was the state champion for 5A last year," Marzan said. "Region Seven is going to be a tough league." In fact, the Vikings' entire season schedule is going to be a huge challenge. chal-lenge. By the time they open Region Seven play at Mountain View Aug. 28, they will have played soccer contenders Hurricane, Park City, Payson, and Dixie. The six seniors that Marzan will have his squad looking to for leadership include Erin Anderson, Holly Little, Heather Bradford, . Natalie Schellenberg, Rachel Willardson, and Maile Yuzon. "Rachel Willardon and Maile Yuzon are our team captains for this year," Marzan said. He said, "Our returning sweepers will be Chantel Cowley and Catania Graves. Rachel Willardson and Felicia Marzan will be midfielders. Leslie McBride will be at forward. Ilision 3 it favorites to be on the receiving receiv-ing end of Peterson's passes. As in the past, the tight end is an important part of Mikelson's offense. Finding a sure handed blocker will be important for the Vikings to succeed. Friday's endowment game against Timpview gets underway at 7 p.m. on the Thunderbird's home field. Mikelson and T-Bird coach Chad Van Orden have established a long running rivalry between the two schools that dates back to the late 1980s. On the subject of long running rivalries, Mikelson begins his 15lh season at the helm of Pleasant Grove Tr in practice on Monday. Hopefully, she will be one of the top forwards in the region." The Viking schedule will be a tough road, mainly because six of the first seven games for Pleasant Grove are just that, on the road. Pleasant Grove's lone home game in August and September is a matchup with Provo on Sept. 7. Not only will the Vikings be on the road a lot, but they will be on the road against a tough bunch of teams. Orem is the favorite to claim the Northern Utah County region 7 (Sept. 21). Timpview is always a favorite in the state tournament tourna-ment and will be the opponent oppo-nent for the opener this Friday, not to mention a trip to Brigham City next week to play Region 4 favorite Box Elder. When Pleasant Grove does return home, powerhouse power-house Weber High School (newly in 5A) will be waiting wait-ing for an Oct. 5 Homecoming battle. The game will truly be a homecoming home-coming for the Vikings as they reintroduce themselves them-selves to the hometown crowd. Regardless of the schedule sched-ule or the lack of experience, experi-ence, count on one thing, as the season progresses, the coaching staff will get this group of players ready for a region race towards the playoffs. Mikelson and his staff always seem to find a way to create a contender even when they've got a wet-behind-the-ears group of players. year's junior varsity players. "They will be real good," he said. "They have five ninth graders who are really real-ly good." Marzan's assistants this year will be Jesee and Greg Bishop, a married couple.
