Wild animals should be avoided, especially young ones, because although the youngsters may appear to be abandoned, mother is usually not far away and tends to be quite territorial, creating a dangerous situation situa-tion for the interfering humans. Although animals may appear to be cuddly and friendly, they are still wild animals and distance should be maintained to keep a situation safe. Safe drinking water is usually unavailable, unavail-able, unless you. have purification purifi-cation tablets or water purifiers puri-fiers available on the trail. Although spring and creek water may appear to be clean and safe, many waters are contaminated with Giardia, which can make travelers sick for up to two weeks. Clothing Bring a hat. The sun can really be a joy and illuminate spectacular vistas, but it can also be a problem to hikers traveling in the heat of the day. Heat stroke and heat exhaustion can both be minimized by wearing a hat and traveling during the cooler, more enjoyable morning and evening hours. A jacket or sweater will help ward off the cold after the sun sets. A long sleeved shirt and pants may avoid sunburn, insect bites, and stinging nettle, Rees sacrifice groundout. Food Bring high energy ener-gy snacks for the trail and plenty of treats for the youngsters. Little food rewards, along the way, help make the journey seem shorter and will provide energy for the trek. Snacks are great along the trail, but visitors are reminded to avoid littering and keeping the trail as pristine as possible. pos-sible. Inform others of your travel plans It is always wise to inform someone of your travel plans and estimated esti-mated time of arrival. Although it is usually quite difficult to keep deadlines, while in the backcountry, due to unexpected delays, losing track of time, etc., a deadline should be scheduled, sched-uled, when help will be summoned, should you not return within a reasonable time. Other things to bring There are a lot of items that can prove to be useful along the trail in certain situations. sit-uations. These include first aid kits, a lightweight flashlight, flash-light, a whistle to signal for help, a pocketknife, matches in a waterproof container, sun screeninsect repellant, extra food and clothing, a map, and a compass. Many of these items can easily be carried in a fanny pack or a light backpack. Although some of these items may appear to be unnecessary, many travelers have been grateful to have them later. 85 til" -.11 - f t !S V .
