Show New Utah! - Wednesday, June 13, 2001 - Page 9 Wanted: Dads looking for a rail good time . . . rv Debra Hart The Heber Valley Railroad is offering all dads a special Trpat for Father's Day this JJJe 17. All dads and Granddads can "enjoy a rail eood time" as they hop aboard foe Heber Creeper for a free ride this Sunday. Based in Heber City, the geber Valley Railroad offers eXtraordinary steam-engine train trips, which snake the scenic farmlands of the Heber Valley, cruise around the edge of Deer Creek Lake, and sidewind side-wind along the Provo River through the breathtaking provo Canyon. Built in 1899, the railroad line running from Provo to Heber was originally created by the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad Company to haul freight into the Heber Valley and transport livestock out. The train was a lifeline for the settlers living in the mountain valley. It is now owned by the State of Utah and operated by the Heber Valley Historic Railroad Authority as a year-round tourist attraction. In 1967, highways replaced the need for hauling freight by railroad and the Heber train, nicknamed the Heber Creeper around the turn of the century for its slow-paced crawl up the canyon to Heber, stopped running. run-ning. However, in 1970 the trains once again picked up steam as a recreational outlet running along the scenic tracks of the Provo Canyon. According to Ken McConnell, Director of Marketing and Media for the Heber Valley Railroad, then-goal then-goal this year is to carry more than 70,000 passengers on a historical trip back in time. Two 1907 Baldwin steam locomotives will be doing most of the work. Engine No. 618 has been in Heber since 1971 and Engine No. 75 was acquired in 1999 from the lit a SS "i 1 A f i Tf. ? - T r7rf r'fc.V, T ii- r-i - v-? It also appeared in TV episodes of "Touched by an Angel" and "Promised Land." The Heber Valley Railroad will continue to script its history his-tory book during the 2002 Olympics by carrying passengers passen-gers to the cross-country skiing ski-ing and biathlon events held at Soldier Hollow. McConnell says the rides will only be available to Soldier Hollow event ticket holders and urges ticket holders to make reservations now, since seats on the shuttle service will be limited. A variety of train trips are offered through the Heber Valley Railroad including: the Soldier Hollow Express, a IV2 hour summer excursion to Decker Bay at Deer Creek Reservoir; the Lakeside Limited, a 2 hr. 15 min. winter win-ter tour through Heber Valley and along the shore of Deer Creek Reservoir; and the Provo Canyon Limited, offering offer-ing a 32-mile round trip from Heber City to Vivian Park 3 on 3 at Thanksgiving Point On Saturday, June 23, Thanksgiving Point will host the first annual "3 on 3 at the Point" basketball tournament.
