He will study engineering engi-neering at the University of Utah. Erma Larson to celebrate tOOth birthday Erma Fox Larson will be honored for her 100th birthday from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 20, with a gathering of family and friends at the family fami-ly home at 324 N. 400 East, Lehi. Erma was born May 22, 1900, in Lehi to Eli Fox and Juliette Prestwich. She was educated in Lehi schools and Lincoln, Idaho. She completed the seventh grade in Lehi. She went to Lincoln, Idaho, to help her grandmother. While there she graduated from the eighth grade. Returning to Lehi, she completed two years of high school. Erma was a telephone operator oper-ator at the Lehi exchange prior to her marriage to Neil Larson on April 9, 1924, in Salt Lake City. They were later sealed in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Neil passed away in 1968. She was a nursing attendant at the Utah State Training School for many years. An active member of the LDS Church, she was a teacher in Primary, MIA and was ward librarian for 18 years. She also served many years as a visiting teacher in Relief Society. Ian Carter earns award Ian Carter, eighth grade, of Pleasant Grove Jr. High received the Lieutenant Governor's Excellence in Youth award in Leadership for the Alpine School district. Ian is also a state semi-finalist. He received his award May 9 at the Alpine School District board meeting. He is the pres-dient pres-dient of the student leader group called P.A.L.S. (Peer Advisory Leaders). PG Jr. High to hold 9th grade completion night May 23 Pleasant Grove Jr. High School administration is hosting host-ing a Celebration of Excellence to honor 9lh grade completion Tuesday, May 23 at 7 p.m. in the school auditorium. All ninth grade students and parents are invited. Ninth grade students who purchased a yearbook may pick it up after the program. For many years, she shared her talent tal-ent as a quilter and marked many quilt tops. She hand-pieced hand-pieced many beautiful quilts for her family, including baby quilts for the grandchildren. She is the mother of six children: chil-dren: Rex (Evelyn, deceased) (Lorna); Patricia (James) Gray; Von, deceased (Ruth Ann), all of Lehi; Lois (Glen) Jorgensen and Glenda (LeRoy) Carter, Pleasant Grove; Norma (Paul) Mecham, American Fork. She has enjoyed being a grandmother to 23 grandchildren, grandchil-dren, a great-grandmother to 59 and. a great-great-grandmother to 16. With the help of her family, she has continued to live in the family home in Lehi. LaMar D. Scott will celebrate cele-brate his 80th birthday on May 24. His family will honor him at a barbecue at the family home on Saturday, May 20. LaMar was born May 24, 1920, in San Francisco, Calif. He was reared in Salt Lake City, graduating from Granite High School and the University of Utah. He served five years in the U.S. Coast during World War II, participating in the invasions of Okinawa and Iwo Jim a. He married Vergia Thalman Oct. 23, 1942 in Sigurd, Utah. They moved to Lindon in 1950. They are the parents of 10 children: Del T and Darlene, Spring Lake; Verla and Michael Legeman, Pomona, Calif; Mikan Scott, deceased; Cris G., Wendover, Nev.; Lane D. and Pam, Pleasant Grove; Margia and Pat Flaa, Farmington; Jes E and Clarie, American Fork; LaDee and Blaine Larson, Lindon; Verg L. and Roberta, Fairbanks, J' - " "- 1 1. LaMar D. Scott Alaska; Giala and Leo Koetje, Salt Lake City. There are 30 grandchildren and 20 greatgrandchildren. great-grandchildren. He retired from U.S. Steel, Geneva, in 1979 after 29 years as a metallurgical engineer. He is involved in retail in Salt Lake City. He is an active member of the LDS Church. I Ian Carter President Clinton has named Glen Westbroek, a resident resi-dent of Lindon, as a recipient of the nation's highest honor for U.S. science teachers in grades K through 12. Westbroek, a teacher at Orem Junior High School in Orem, is among 200 teachers selected for the 1999 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. Rita Colwell, director of the National Science Foundation, which administers the awards program on behalf of the White House said, "The teachers we honor here are educating those who will lead this country, and the world, in creating, developing develop-ing and putting to work new ideas and new technologies." Each year, a national panel of distinguished scientists, mathematicians, and educators recommends teachers to receive a Presidential Award one elementary and one secondary sec-ondary math teacher and one elementary and one secondary science teacher from each state and four designated jurisdictions. jurisdic-tions. The 1999 awardees were selected from among 648 state finalists. As an awardee, Mr. Westbroek will receive a $7,500 educational grant to be used at Orem Junior High School, a Presidential citation, and a trip to Washington, D.C., for a series of recognition events, information exchange programs, pro-grams, and an awards ceremony-Mr. Westbroek is a graduated graduat-ed of Brigham Young University.
