Morrill wins Hall of Fame scholarship By Dean Von Memmott I Sports Correspondent A former standout for the Pleasant Grove Vikings' female athletics program will be addressing a Feb. 26 banquet sponsored by the Utah Sports Hall of Fame Foundation at the University of Utah. A recipient of a 1999 scholarship scholar-ship of $2000 from the Foundation, Heather Morrill will be telling about her academic acade-mic and athletic accomplishments accomplish-ments during her Viking days. Morrill said, "The scholarship scholar-ship was for someone who played sports, but would not be going to college on an athletic scholarship." Through most of her high school days, she had maintained main-tained a 4.0 grade point average. aver-age. She recalled, "I had straight A's until I took calculus. calcu-lus. It knocked my GPA down to 3.99. Taking calculus was worth it, though." Now a BYU student, she is studying to be a registered nurse. Morrill was a three-sport athlete at Pleasant Grove. During her four years of involvement in the Viking girls' athletic programs, she played softball, basketball and volleyball. volley-ball. "I became involved with soft-ball soft-ball when I was in ninth grade," y i - - Heather Morrill Morrill said. "My sophomore year, I start playing it on a varsity var-sity level. I first played outfield, then ended up playing second base." She recalled that her then-softball then-softball coach Lisa Hall "made the sport fun for me." . Hall is now an assistant coach for the BYU Cougars' women's softball team. Morrill said, "I haven't seen her yet on campus, but I've been keeping an eye out for her." Morrill said, "It was fun having hav-ing my sister Cami with me on the softball. team for two years." The Morrill sisters also played varsity basketball together -one year. Heather played forward and Cami point guard. . . Heather Morrill's basketball career began with her involvement involve-ment in Junior Jazz leagues. She graduated to playing basketball bas-ketball for Pleasant Grove Junior High's seventh, eighth and ninth grade teams. She made the Pleasant Grove sophomore team, and during her junior year, she saw action at State. The Vikings got eliminated from the tournament tourna-ment after the first round. ' Her junior year, Morrill decided to go out for the Vikings' volleyball program. She made the jayvee squad, coached by Marie Bone. Morrill said, "Marie was good to play under." Even so, Morrill determined that for her senior year, she should focus on softball and basketball. While her participation in athletics didn't net her an athletic ath-letic scholarship, she did receive the academic scholarship. scholar-ship. She is presently playing intramural basketball, and she is involved with community service programs. To high school athletes, her words are: "Concentrate on your studies." The banquet is open to the public. For those wishing to attend, the meal ticket is $25 a plate. Boys still in the playoff hun By Todd Veenker Sports Correspondent Pleasant Grove may have lost twice last week against Lone Peak and Payson, but those two losses don't matter if the Vikings managed a Tuesday night victory at Springville. Following a wild week of region action, four teams found themselves tied for the final play-off slot from Region Six. Springville, who was all but written off as the last place team in the region, pulled off big victories this past week to move into a tie with the Vikings, American Fork and Spanish Fork for the opportunity opportuni-ty to face Olympus at the Dee Event Center next week. For the Vikings, an upset victory vic-tory over Payson or Lone Peak could have meant at least a tie for the final play-off slot. But a win was not in the Pleasant Grove cards as Lone Peak handled han-dled the Vikings easily for a 75 - 53 victory. Friday Payson came to town and sent the Pleasant Grove seniors away with an 88 - 74 loss in the final home game of their careers. Against the Knights, Pleasant Grove fell in an early hole as Lone Peak jumped out to a 27 - 15 lead in the first quarter. Cameron Patch and Justin Shepherd led Pleasant Grove in the quarter with seven and six points respectively, respective-ly, but the Lone Peak offense was in high gear with little resistence from the Viking defense. Erek Bond broke out in the second quarter for Pleasant Grove as he poured in nine of his game total 11 points, but only two other Vikings were able to score during the second period as Lone Peak extended their lead to a 43 - 30 halftime advantage. While Shepherd had the hot hand in the first, third and fourth quarters, Lone Peak may have won the game during the second quarter when they held Shepherd scoreless during a 'critical period when the Knights were struggling offensively offen-sively as well. Shepherd finished the night with a team high 14 points. The Lone Peak defense continued con-tinued to hound Pleasant Grove in the third quarter. Though Kyle Anderson was able to convert with five points in the quarter, the Knights continued con-tinued to build their lead, heading head-ing into the fourth quarter with a 15-point margin. Ten points in the final eight minutes was all the struggling Vikings could manage as Lone Peak poured in 17 points of their own to cap the game with a 22 point victory. The game turned out much differently than the first meeting meet-ing between these two teams when Pleasant Grove took a lead into the fourth quarter before falling to the Knights at home in early January. Friday night the Vikings were looking for redemption as they took the court against the Payson Lions, who had held on for dear life after a spectacular Pleasant Grove come back at Payson earlier in the season. , Payson set the tone of the game early as the Lions jumped out to a 16 - 10 lead thanks to the three point shot. The Vikings opened the game with five of the seven seniors taking the floor as the starting During the second period the Lions went on a 16 - 2 run by way of the long bomb shot and Pleasant Grove appeared shell shocked. With a 34 - 16 deficit facing the Vikings, Pleasant Grove began to chip away at Payson's lead with six minutes remaining in the half. Eight Pleasant Grove players play-ers scored during the second quarter as Pleasant Grove inched to within eight points with four minutes remaining in the half. The come back was a welcome site after the Vikings had fallen behind by as many as 17 points. Colt Sampson came off the bench late in the second quarter quar-ter to score four important points and help swing the momentum toward the Viking bench just before the half. At the end of two quarters of play, Pleasant Grove was within striking distance with the Lions leading 41 - 29. But despite a fairly nice performance perfor-mance by the Vikings, the third quarter would belong to Payson. Again in the third quarter, Pleasant Grove saw offensive production from six Vikings. And even though Pleasant Grove scored 18 points in the third quarter, Payson extended their lead thanks to a near perfect per-fect shooting night.
