Karen O'Donnell FRIENDS IN NEED ANIMAL SANCTUARY Donna Milakovic NDRIH rrjIJNIY MAII Volunteers braved the blazing blaz-ing sun on July Fourth to help out some four-footed friends. Fifteen energetic helpers showed up at the Friends in Need animal sanctuary to help iastall a fence around the property prop-erty and run electricity to the existing horse pastures. "We just want to help out, because they are doing a good thing here," said volunteer Shawn Wood, during a brief water break. Wood and his father spent the afternoon digging fencepost holes. The fences were being built to provide pro-vide more grazing areas for the seven horses living there. Friends in Need is a nonprofit non-profit organization run from the O'Donnell's home on Lake Mountain Road in Eagle Mountain. Moun-tain. Kim O'Donnell and his wife, Karen, started the animal rescue projects seven years ago. They started out saving cats and dogs. In recent years the sanctuary has become home to an increasing number of farm animals with no other home. "We started out with cats and dogs, but now we are doing do-ing more farm rescues," said Kim O'Donnell. The shelter houses around 100 animals including a few dogs and cats, 30 rabbits, seven sev-en horses, a number of pigs, ducks, goats and a turkey. Students from a veterinary program in South Jordan, visit Friends in Need regularly to do blood tests on the animais and help keep them healthy. The sanctuary depends on volunteers for all aspects of operation include constructing construct-ing new shelters, feeding and grooming and finding animals ani-mals in need. Kim and Karen O'Donnell both say the animals come first and they appreciate all the help they get. As volunteers, mostly college col-lege students, started arriving arriv-ing by the car load, Karen O'Donnell pointed out that their common interests had made them all friends. "The thing we have in common com-mon is the love of animals," she said. Anyone wishing to help with Friends in Need's efforts can get information from their Web site at www.friends-in-need.org.
