Show Thursday, October 5, 2006 AMERICAN FORK CITIZEN Page 7 Football Continued from Page 6 the second quarter hauled in a seam route from Don senior quarterback Griff Robles and went 36 yards for the score. The biggest problems for .the visitors were the extra points. They had two blocked, including includ-ing one on a great individual effort by American Fork senior se-nior safety Matt Harward. Harward timed the snap perfectly on Spanish Fork's first kick, completely hurdling the line and landing right in front of the kicker to make the block. But what the Dons lacked in the kicking game, they made up for in field position. Their average start position was the 47-yard line, almost 20 yards better than the Cavemen. "That was something we worked on in practice," Chris-tensen Chris-tensen said. "Field position really re-ally hurt us against Lone Peak last week. I was proud of the offense moving the ball, but we always seemed to end up with a penalty or a turnover to shift the momentum." After falling behind 9-0, American Fork pulled within two with a 15-yard touchdown run by Robbie Lusk followed by an Eddie Holloway PAT. Spanish Fork then got another an-other touchdown, but the Cavemen Cave-men answered with a 13-yard scoring strike from Jones to Anthony McGeary, cutting the advantage to 16-14 at the break. Robles went over on a short run in the third period to set up the exciting conclusion. For injury -riddled American Fork, it was achingly close. "We outrushed them stats-wise," stats-wise," pointed out Caveman coach Davis Knight. "Early they had the one drive that kind of put us in a hole. "We executed our offense well as we were driving for a field goal at the end," he added. "The kids battled back and showed character, but it just didn't work out." Beky Beaton contributed to this report. Continued from Page 6 beat out the Bruins for their league's No. 3 state playoff spot. American Fork's Nikki Pack-ham Pack-ham scored the first goal of the game on a direct kick midway through the first half. Bruin Kylie Peterson booted in a tying goal near the end of the half. Less than a minute after the Bruin goal, American Fork's Kaycee Mansfield scored a tying ty-ing goal, and teammate Nikki Ybarra broke the tie within 30 seconds. I Sept. 28 Lone Peak 5, American Ameri-can Fork 0: The American Fork soccer team played hard and showed good progress In Highland, High-land, but they came up short against the region champions. The teams dueled evenly for the first 10 minutes, but the Knights then scored twice less than a minute apart. A.F. did manage to get a number of solid shots off. but didn't find the net. Defenders Whitney Fuller, Kristi Vogelsberg, Nikki Pack-ham Pack-ham and Haley Kellersberger did a nice job of marking the Lone Peak attackers. Freshman Lindsey Hansen also tied up prolific pro-lific forward Lauren Hair often enough to hamper her game. Still, Hair had three goals and one assist in the victory. It was Caveman keeper April Hansen who made the play of the game in the second half. She snagged a shot while lying on her back with her feet toward the goal for a spectacular save. With about 20 minutes left to play, Vogelsberg pushed the ball forward to Kaycee Mansfield on the right side at the top of the box. Her boot was just wide left. Erika Day also made a nice try with a lob at the 71-minute mark, but the ball went over. Mansfield made some big saves in the net Lite in the game. t Beky Beaton filed this report.
