Show Thursday, December 22, 2005 AMERICAN FORK CITIZEN Page 5 WHO'S WHO AND WHAT'S HAPPENING GXC66 Family store in American Fork strives to uphold a community feel Barbara Christiansen BKTSlhe owners of Penny Pinchers, a dollar store in American Fork, try hard to overcome the image such stores often of-ten carry. Dave and Gina Lye said the store is locally owned and operated op-erated and is able to serve the community well because of that. "We have tried to purchase nicer products." said Dave Lye. "We have about 30 different vendors we buy from." Gina Lye said their local ownership allows them to select products that will be of the most interest to the Utah residents. Also, they do not have to pay franchise fees. "We keep more of the revenue rev-enue here." she said. They said they are willing to take special requests from customers cus-tomers and will try to find the item they are seeking. Their Christmas products have included giant gift bags, gift wrap. Santa hats, stockings stock-ings (for humans and pets), red bows, mugs, statues, tree decorations, deco-rations, cards, stickers, linens, balloons and florals. Service also distinguishes them from competitors, they said. "We have taken and approach ap-proach of a more expensive store." Dave Lye said. "We try to encourage good customer service and encourage encour-age our people to greet the customers cus-tomers and help them. "It is a matter of attitude. Both of us worked at ZCM1. "We have a different attitude toward retail than a lot of dollar stores." "We look for employees who will be friendly and helpful," Gina Lye said. The store's shelves are fiDed with items which are both popular popu-lar and new. They keep some of the basic items all the time and add new things. "We are always getting new items in," Dave Lye said. "We are always open to suggestions sug-gestions about things to bring in." Dave Lye said. "We have wonderful venders for our supplies and we go to shows sometimes." At those shows they get a chance to view the actual products. prod-ucts. They also said they try to use local suppliers whenever they can. "We buy our paper products, cards, balloons and candv lo cally," Dave Lye said. "We also carry Gary's Original Origi-nal Caramel Corn balls, which are made in Pleasant Grove." He said there are two advantages ad-vantages to that revenue from the purchases stays in the area, and the customers can get fresher products. Some of the items they carry are pet toys and grooming items, lunch supplies, office items such as pens, glue and notebooks, toys, jewelry, puzzle books and baby items.
