Show Thursday, December 22, 2005 NORTH COUNTY NEWSPAPERS Police SELECTED INCIDENTS Utah County Two north Utah County men were killed early Sunday morning when their Honda Accord rear-ended rear-ended a tow truck. The accident occurred at approximately 1:45 a.m. on 1-15 near 2800 South in Salt Lake. The men were traveling southbound south-bound in the left emergency shoulder shoul-der when their vehicle struck a tow truck that was removing a disabled vehicle, said Utah Highway Patrol spokesman Jeff Nigbur. Curtis Edwards, 26, driver, Cedar Hills, was killed instantly. Jason Peck, 29, Eagle Mountain, a passenger pas-senger in the vehicle, died shortly after at a Salt Lake hospital. A second passenger, Tanner Southwick, 24, of American Fork, received only minor injuries. One of the two tow truck drivers sustained injuries and was taken to the hospital. Alpine Highland BURGLARY - Police were dispatched dis-patched to a residential burglary in progress. When police arrived, a neighbor had the suspect detained at gunpoint, and police took him into custody without incident. It was later discovered he had burglarized another home in the vicinity. He was booked into the Utah County Jail on three counts of residential burglary. TRAFFIC STOP - Police cited a driver in Alpine, and his vehicle was towed after he was stopped for a traffic infraction. It was determined deter-mined the driver had no insurance and his vehicle registration was revoked. TRAFFIC ACCIDENT INJURY Officers responded to a parking park-ing lot at a Highland business on a traffic accident in which a vehicle had rolled out of gear pinning the driver's leg between the car door and the frame. The car then collided col-lided with another vehicle. The driver was treated at the scene by paramedics and released. DISORDERLY CONDUCT - A juvenile boy was cited for disorderly disor-derly conduct at the Lone Peak High School. CRIMINAL MISCHIEF - A resi-dent resi-dent of Highland reported that ice had been thrown from a moving vehicle and hit his car. Police were able to locate the suspect vehicle and identified who had thrown the ice. Cedar Fort Fairfield MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT - An adult dirt bike rider suffered serious seri-ous injuries when he apparently hit a rock and was thrown from the bike at least 20 feet on Dec. 17. His companions called 911, and police and EMS personnel from Cedar Fort and Eagle Mountain responded. respond-ed. The accident occurred in a canyon can-yon near Allen's Ranch Road. The rider was wearing a helmet and full protective gear. He was flown to University of Utah Medical Center. briefs STAGECOACH INN CAMP FLOYD Become a Junior Pony Express Rider A Junior Pony Express Rider program will be conducted at Camp Floyd State Park from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Dec. 29. The program pro-gram will be repeated throughout through-out the day and Ls designed for children; however, anyone is welcome to participate. Admission is $2 per person, per-son, or $6 per family, Upon completing the activities and program workbook, kids will be awarded an official Pony Express Ex-press wooden nickel and get to sample "hardtack." Reservations are being AS COMPILED BY STAFF. Lehi FUNDRAISER - The Lehi Police officers volunteered to raise funds for a Sub for Santa program and Cabela's offered to host the event. The officers were able to raise nearly $6,000 in three days. All of the money will go to local Lehi families. "We're pretty excited about it," Sgt. Darrin Paul said. "We're thankful for Cabela's and the citizen's generosity." Several families will be helped, he said. By comparison, officers were able to raise $1,100 for the 2004 fundraiser. THEFT A student tried using a wire coat hanger to get into a vending vend-ing machine at Lehi Junior High School on Dec. 12. He was successful success-ful only at receiving a citation for attemptod theft. TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS - There were several traffic accidents listed in the police reports last week with a vehicle hitting another vehicle. Drivers are asked to slow down. HIT AND RUN - There was one hit and run at Shady Bend and Sunset Sun-set Way in Lehi. The victim was a fire hydrant and police are looking for a dinged vehicle with red paint and scraped bumper. TRAFFIC ACCIDENT - A vehicle rolled backwards at 2510 N. 1200 West and hit a utility pole. The pole appeared unharmed. No mention was made of the vehicle's condition. condi-tion. ALCOHOL OR DRUGS - A few drivers were pulled over and booked into jail last week on possession pos-session of drug paraphernalia, driving driv-ing under the influence of drugs and other unsafe driving practices. WARRANT SERVICE - A driver was pulled over on Dec. 11 at 1800 E. State St. and was booked into jail on a warrant while also cited for driving on suspension. Orem POSSESSION OF DRUG PARAPHERNALIA PARA-PHERNALIA - 26-year-old Nick Waterhouse, of Spanish Fork, caused a problem Monday afternoon after-noon at the FedEx business, 70 N. 1200 West, in Orem. He tried to retrieve a package that was apparently ap-parently already out on a delivery truck, so he couldn't get it. He was upset and made a couple of comments com-ments about how he'd blow the place up if he were crazy. The folks at FedEx didn't wait to see if he really re-ally was nor not, they called the police. po-lice. Waterhouse apparently knew that it wasn't going to be a good thing for him if the police came, and tried to leave, but was stopped in the parking lot by the officers. He had a couple of traffic warrants out for his arrest and when he was searched, had a meth pipe in his pocket. He was booked into the Orem holding facility on the warrants war-rants and possession of drug paraphernalia para-phernalia in a drug-free zone. SUICIDE ATTEMPT - A mother called at about 3 a.m. Tuesday morning to say that her 15-year-old son was trying to commit suicide. Officers responded to the south Orem home and found the boy just inside the front door, screaming. He was bleeding from cuts on his arms and held a knife to his throat. The boy was losing blood and the officers needed to do something quickly because he refused to put the knife down. They incapacitated the boy quickly by firing a Tazer device at him. The boy went down immediately immedi-ately and the officers were able to take the knife away from him. They then worked to control the bleeding bleed-ing until paramedics positioned outside the home could come in and offer medical assistance. The boy was transported to the hospital, hospi-tal, where he is reported in good condition. The mother needed stitches in her hand for the wound she received. ROBBERY - A lone man went into Check N Go at 376 East University Uni-versity Parkway on Friday afternoon after-noon at 3 p.m. The suspect had ridden up on a bicycle and was described de-scribed as a white male, 25-years-old, 6 feet, 200 lbs., with a week's growth of facial hair, and wearing a blue hood, black beanie cap, and sunglasses. The suspect demanded de-manded money from the woman employee. No weapon was seen, though the suspect did keep a hand inside his pocket as if he had one. The suspect was given an undisclosed undis-closed amount of money and fled on the bike. He was not located. y '. THEFT - A purse was stolen from a car parked inside an open garage in the area of 1400 North and 900 West. The theft took place sometime some-time Friday night. HIT AND RUN ACCIDENT - A 26-year old Orem man was driving a car on Saturday afternoon in the area of 50 W. University Parkway. He rear-ended the car in front of him and got out to speak with the other driver. When the other driver suggested that they call the police to investigate the accident, the suspect got back into his car and fled. Officers responded to the tegistered owner's address and the suspect's girlfriend assured the officers that the suspect wasn't at home. However, she did allow them into the home to search. Officers Of-ficers found the suspect in a bedroom bed-room closet hiding beneath a pile of dirty clothes. He was arrested and booked into the Orem holding facility on a list of charges. DRUG ARREST - Officer Ryan Porter stopped a suspicious car in the Albertson's parking lot early Friday morning. The 27-year-old driver out of West Valley had a suspended drivers license and was arrested. The 17-year-old West Jordan passenger in the car was in possession of cocaine and arrested. arrest-ed. He was booked into the Slate Canyon Youth Detention Facility. The car was occupied by 61 year old Garry Moxham, of Ogden. Moxham was asleep in the car. Officer Sorensen ran the plate on the car and it came back as being reported stolen out of Las Vegas, Nev. Moxham was awakened, arrested, and booked into the Utah County jail for pos session of a stolen vehicle ASSAULT WARRANT - A man flagged an officer over yesterday morning as the officer was driving in the area of 50 West and 1200 S The driver of the van, a 42 year-old Provo man, reported that his estranged wife hud put a stolen vacuum cleaner clean-er in his van that had been taken from her place of employment. The officer had the man follow him to the local motel where the wife was employed to verify the theft. The man confided in the officer of-ficer that he was ti ying to get back at his wife because she had hit him in the face the night before. Back at the motel, just as the man had said, the vacuum cleaner had been taken without permission from housekeeping. However, the wife may have gotten the last laugh ... she wasn't there to be arrested at the time, but the vindictive husband hus-band was. He had a $2500 warrant for assault out of Provo City. The man was booked into the Utah County jail. Charges for the Class B Misdemeanor theft of the vacuum cleaner will be referred to the Orem City Attorney on the wife. f SERENADERS Page 3 THEFT SUSPECT CAPTURED - 52 year-old Dennis Elton, of Orem, was suspected of stealing things in the past from Codale Electric at 362 S. Commerce Loop. Elton went into Codale the afternoon of Dec. 12 and hid several items inside his coat before leaving the store. Store employees were aware of Elton and saw him attempt to steal the items from the store. Elton made the tactical error of parking his burgundy bur-gundy Plymouth Breeze up against the building, an error that was exploited by a quick thinking employee em-ployee that pulled a company truck in front of Elton's cur, trapping it against the building and preventing Elton from leaving until Orem of ficers arrived. In addition to the stolen sto-len items from the store, Elton was found to be in possession of drug paraphernalia. He was booked into the Utah County jail. Saratoga Springs VEHICLE FIRE - Police are investigating inves-tigating a suspicious vehicle fire that completely destroyed a car on Dec. 9. No injuries were reported. HOUSE FIRE - Police and firefighters firefight-ers responded to a house fire in Lake Mountain Estates on Dec. 13 that caused between $60,000 to $75,000 worth of damage to the home The fire apparently started when three juveniles cooking scones in the kitchen.
