Show SCERA presents musical comic book adventure "Starmites," a musical comic book adventure nominated for six Tony -' Awards and a play with an exceptionally excep-tionally loyal fan base, will play at, the SCERA Center Oct. 18 to 23, featuring performers from Acting Up!, the advanced students from the SCERA Youth Theatre program. Performances will begin at 7:30 p.m. in SCERA Showhouse II, 745 S. ' State in Orem. Tickets at $6 for adults and $4 for children (3 to 11), students (with ID) and seniors (65) are available from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays at the SCERA box office, by calling 225-2569 or 225-ARTS or at the door 45 minutes prior to the show. All seats are reserved. "'Starmites' is a wild romp through a science fiction comic book," said Robert Barham, production produc-tion manager for the SCERA Youth Theatre. "It features a shy teenager who is dissatisfied with her life and who builds a fantasy world around the characters in the comic books she collects. She gets drawn into the comic book and saves not only the comic book world, but her real world as well. It's a wonderful adventure." As the play unfolds, the girl's mother is distressed that her daughter Eleanor is escaping into a fantasy world where she imagines herself as a heroine called Superhero Super-hero Girl. Eleanor is coming of age, and in the solitude of her bedroom on planet earth, she is drawn into conflicts and comes to believe she is pre-ordained to save the universe from destruction and aid the Starmites, Star-mites, the guardian angels of inner space. The lead, Eleanor, is played by Kaylie Bell. Her romantic lead is Space Punk, played by Adam Steele, and her nemesis is the Diva, Queen of the Banshees, performed by Mar-ray Mar-ray Ellis. Shak Graa, the High Priest of Chaos, is played by Nicholas J. Frandsen. The production produc-tion is under the direction of Laurel Barham. The New York Times praised the production by comparing it to other otherworld productions. Critic Mel Gussow wrote, "First there was Star Trek. Then there was Star Wars. Now . . . there is Starmites, which is certainly the mite-iest of the three intergalactic epics, a musical nebulae nebu-lae of cheerful nuttiness. A near solo-creative flight by Barry Keating Keat-ing - music, book, lyrics. . . 'Starmites' 'Star-mites' appeals to a constellation of space-trippers, adults as well as children." "This rock musical has a bit of a cult following and is a lot of fun," Barham added. "We like presenting it because we know it will be something some-thing new for the audience - people go in not knowing what to expect and come out fans. Those who know 'Starmites' return back time and time again to see it and have a blast. It's a great show that everyone every-one should discover, and is an especially espe-cially good way to introduce children chil-dren and teenagers to the magic of live theatre." SCERA's Acting Up! troupe brought the musical "Honk" to the SCERA earlier this year and is the same ensemble that leaves the day after "Starmites" closes for training and workshops in New York City. New Utah - Thursday, October 14, 2004 - Page 13 Capelli's hairdressers strut their hair-dos Robert Cunningham Students of Capelli's Institute of Hair showcased show-cased their creations last Thursday with an outdoor, autumn fashion show. More than 150 models, including the school's 38 students, dolled up for a stroll down the runway. "It's a confidence builder and a little bit of advertising," said Shalana Robinson, partner of Capelli's and emcee of the event. "The students learn hairdressing mostly out of a book. Doing the fashion show brought the book to life." Though the event was small, Robinson hopes the fashion show will become a popular annual event. Half of the show focused on the hip and fashionable. The other half was a Halloween parade, featuring Rainbow Brite, Captain Jack Sparrow, Spar-row, and Pleasant Grove's own living dead. Capelli's has been cutting cut-ting hair for the community communi-ty since January. Robinson Robin-son wants to emphasize Pleasant Grove's cooperation coopera-tion with getting the school started. "There are some people in Pleasant Grove who want you to think that the city is hard to work with, but Pleasant Grove has done everything to help us out," said Robinson, "Pleasant Grove has been good to us."
