About the firemon lx- Roy II. dnffin was fire rliiof during thow yearH, with a full complement of firemen and two modern fire engines, plus a brush truck used mainly for grass fires at the ready. On the morning of June 20, Scott Sparks, a memlx-r of the local fire department and also a niemlxT of the Utah Highway Patrol, had a busy and distressing day. Patrolling 1-15 in the ProvoOrem area he was called to the scene of an early morning motor home on fire. The three occupants died in the flames tafore they could Ixj rescued. It was Spark's responsibility to assist in the removal of the burned victims. vic-tims. He continued patrol and returned home that after-nx)n after-nx)n anticipating attending the Lehi Roundup parade and rodeo. The fire telephone system alerted him of a fire call and he hurried to the station, along with all other firemen to go out on the call. As the firemen were getting into their gear a second call came that it was a false- alarm. As they were putting equipment back into on-alert position they asked Sparks about the earlier accident and resulting fire. Since it was out of their area they had not been called to assist. Being firemen, they were interested in details. . While the firemen were still at the station, the overhead over-head d(xr open, the call came in for the Fourth Ward Church fire. No time was lost in assembly. They rushed to the fire scene. The fire scene All went directly to their posts and were aboard when both large trucks rolled out of the stations moments later. Once they arrived at the scene they laid out hoses to nearby fire hydrants and others oth-ers checked the Bcene. They knew it was going to be a "bad one!" The fire was burning so hot they could not put ladders against the walls. It was a very intense situation. They had to depend on the pressure pres-sure of the pumps to get the water above the roofline and onto the fire. r v. r- ; .. v?;i- y - Ml V- Lehi and Pleasant Grove fire departments were called to assist in the emergency. In all there were five fire units at the scene, complete with all available firemen from the three communities. Allen Hansen was assigned, on a pump truck and once the tank was exhausted found he could not pump from the hydrant He quickly moved the portable pump to the nearby irrigation ditch and began pumping water from that source to the fire. His new automatic pump was much more efficient that the original manual pump used routinely by the early firemen. In fact, it was mandated man-dated by city ordinance that when a fire was in progress all available, irrigation water was to be diverted from ordinary ordi-nary ditch distribution and routed down the ditch nearest near-est the fire location. The manual man-ual pump was placed in the bottom of the ditch and four firemen manually pumped the water up to ground level where it was sent into water lines attached to the top of the pump. As in earlier days, water users objected to losing their irrigation turns. A nearby resident res-ident who had walked up the ditch to see why he was not getting any water accosted Hansen, a member of the American Fork Fourth Ward. When he objected, Hansen quietly replied that the water was being used to "save the Lords house." The man retreated without comment Ironically smoke filled the air and the flames and smoke could be seen throughout the city. Read more about the fire in Part II next week.
