Soccer gets first region win By Beky Beaton The American Fork soccer soc-cer team got the first region victory of the season Thursday Thurs-day 4-0 at Spanish Fork on Thursday. Earlier in the week, they lost a very physical phys-ical contest at Provo 0-4 on Sept. 16. The Bulldogs were issued a yellow and a red card in the Tuesday contest. "In the first half we came out a little lit-tle tentative, and Provo dominated possession and shots 11-2," said coach Jan Vogelsberg. Midway through the first half, defender Lauren Bangerter collided with a Provo player and both suffered concussions. concus-sions. The Bulldogs scored their first goal on a header off a corner kick. At halftime the Cavemen trailed 0-3. "In the second half we settled down and played a more even match, but couldn't score," the coach said. "Scoring has been the problem all year. We're creating cre-ating the opportunities, but no one has been able to finish. fin-ish. We've been working on it every day in practice; we just need to get that first one," she added. As it turned out, what the coach was looking for he - I 1 .. ii mni.iiait ''y in. Ti T-' ,-. . ' f twis: 1 - ' . ' -KX ' ' i i f ' 1 '- V'f e Jv - ? I happened the very next game, which ended the first round of the region rotation. American Fork controlled con-trolled the ball, created' creat-ed' opportunities, oppor-tunities, and finally put the ball in the back of the net. "We worked hard for the 50-50 balls and played a good ball control game," Vogelsberg said. Adrienne ' Schneider scored the first of her three goals early in the first half. Alyssa Berrett also posted a goal in the first period. "Megen Keith did a great job up front settling the ball down and creating opportunities opportu-nities for the other players," the coach said. "As a team we moved the ball around well and got everyone involved." Vogelsberg continued, "The defense, led by seniors Caveman Carlie Cornell taps the ball away. Brittany Harrison and Becca Bush, did a nice job of limiting the shots by Spanish Span-ish Fork. Amanda Willard got her first shutout of the regular season with 8 saves in the goal. "It was a nice game that hopefully we can build on as we go into the second half of the season. Finishing will be the key to a successful second half," the coach concluded. con-cluded.
