American Fork quarterback quarter-back and Homecoming king James Moore dropped back and found a favorite target, big tight end Mike Pulley, for an 11-yard gain and a critical first down. American Fork then went to work pounding the ball up the middle with fullback full-back Mike Beck and tailback tail-back Chris Muehlmann. Having run successfully on the Lions during the last series, the Cavemen used that to their advantage. On first down, AF ran a play-action play-action fake to the fullback. Payson's defensive backs stepped up, allowing Devin Wilson to get 10 yards behind them. Moore threw a perfect pass to Wilson and he raced down the sideline for another anoth-er AF touchdown. The PAT was good and the Cavemen were up 14-6. On their next possession, the Lions did a nice job of mixing up passing and running run-ning plays, moving down to the AF 11. On third down, Payson's quarterback threw a pass to his slant receiver in the endzone, but it went through his hands and fell incomplete. The Cavemen held on fourth down and took over possession. Two big plays helped the Cavemen drive the ball down the field. First, a 14-yard 14-yard pass play was completed complet-ed from Moore to Pulley. Then, there was a quick trap play up the middle by Beck, with great blocking from Bret Waldron and Brady Jensen, which netted 47 yards. From the 15, Moore found Wilson again in the endzone. The PAT was converted and AF increased the lead to 21-6. Payson's next series was short. On the first play, inside linebacker Bahoravitch Bahorav-itch hit the quarterback just as he was handing off the ball, causing a fumble that was recovered by Muehlmann. "The defense did a nice job causing some turnovers and we took advantage of those situations. Our offense really executed well," said Davis Knight. AF takes on Timpview at home today at 4 p.m. NINTH GRADE: The Cavemen kept a perfect record as they rolled past Payson 50-18 on Saturday. American Fork started the day on defense, and sometimes the best offense is a good defense. After forcing the Lions into a punting situation on their first series, Zack Peterson broke free, blocked the kick and recovered the ball on the 1. From there, Jake Packer ran it in for the touchdown. Jared Holloway made a nice hold and Drew Bahoravitch kicked the extra point to make it 7-0. On the ensuing kickoff, Travis Landeen recovered a fumble deep in Payson's territory. Two plays later, Todd Beck swept around the end for a 10-yard touchdown run. The Cavemen Cave-men ran Anthony McGeary in for the two-point conversion conver-sion and they went up 15-0. Holding the Lions again, the Cavemen got the ball on their own 20. Over the next seven plays, the ball was moved to the Lion 45. AF then gave the ball to Beck again, who got outside and found the endzone. The two point conversion con-version failed and the score remained 21-0. The Cavemen continued to roll with touchdowns from Taylor Mangum on a 15-yard bootleg run, Packer on a 10-yard run, McGeary on a 46-yard counter, and Beck on another 55-yard trap. The PAT was blocked, leaving the score AF 27-6. After consecutive quarterback quar-terback hurries by Waldron and Jensen, the Lions were forced to punt again. Starting on their own 19, the Caveman offense went back to work. Beck ran the ball twice for 10 yards and caught a 28-yard pass. Muehlmann ran the ball four times for 49 yards, including an 11-yard effort for the score. With a good PAT, the lead was now 34-6. Payson, starting deep in their own territory, had disaster dis-aster strike again. This time the quarterback fumbled fum-bled the ball as he was trying try-ing to make a pitch, and linebacker Mitch West recovered it at the Payson 20. Stucki ran up the middle for 13 yards, and on the next play, Moore found wide receiver Trevor Cook in the endzone. The PAT was good and the score stood 41-6 at halftime. With most of AF's starters watching from the sidelines, the second half began with an onside kick from the Lions, which was touched before it went the required 10 yards. Starting at midfield, AF ran the ball seven consecutive times. Varney finished the drive If k..o.m ii prepares to make a handoff with a 30-yard touchdown run on a reverse. The PAT was no good.
