In the earlier games, the Cavemen dropped a 1-7 decision to Provo on April 29, then lost to Springville's ace 13-6 on Thursday. The lone run against the Bulldogs came in the fifth. Shay Conder led off the inning with a double, then came home on a ground-out by Brady Palmer. Conder and Tyson Kinyon went 2 for 3 in the game. American Fork gave up nine runs to the Red Devils in the first inning with the help of multiple errors, but outscored them the rest of the game 6-5. ! " ' ;' je . .. V. nwMl -mi iXm-u 4LS . "He's a pretty good pitcher." The Cavemen managed to get six hits and three walks off the stingy staff ace. Jake Fagan led the offense, hitting two doubles for 3 RBI and also scoring a run. Garrison Brems walked in the fourth and was driven home by a Zach Mitani single. Tyson Davis singled in the third and drew a leadoff walk in the fifth, scoring both times, while Kinyon singled on in the fifth and also scored. Pitcher Mark Brown got off to a rough start in Monday's Mon-day's game, giving up three runs in the top of the first, but he settled in after that and faced five batters or less each of the remaining innings. He allowed just one walk. In the bottom of the first, Brown's teammates responded with a couple of runs, loading the bases following fol-lowing singles by Davis and Kinyon and a Fagan walk. The next batter struck out, but Davis came home on a passed ball while Brems was up to bat, and he then got to first with a base hit. Conder later grounded out, but the other run scored on the play. Mitani singled on to open the lower half of the sixth, then stole second. Davis got a base hit and Kinyon walked to load the bsases. Fagan's single drove in one run, and two more came in later on a Brems double to complete the tally for the day. "This was a good win at a fun park," Ingersoll said. Though officially a home contest, the game was played at UVSC. The Cavemen needed to win both of this week's scheduled games against Timpview to have a shot at the region's final playoff berth. The state tournament tourna-ment starts Tuesday. ::. :; fli : Cavemen hold fop Dogs to one goal Photos by Kent Davis American Fork's Bryce Schneider heads a ball away from a Provo player during Thursday's exciting match. An aggressive attack and fine defense held the region-leading region-leading Bulldogs to a single goal in the second half. By Beky Beaton The American Fork soccer soc-cer team lost both region games last week, but with widely., divergent efforts. The team did not compete well in an 0-5 loss to Springville April 29, but challenged undefeated region leader Provo on Thursday in an 0-1 defeat. The Cavemen were without with-out starting goalkeeper Jason Warburton when they played the Red Devils, as he had to sit out a red card from the previous JV game. The varsity was pulled at halftime, and the JV played the second period. It was an entirely different differ-ent story against the Bulldogs. Bull-dogs. Sometimes teams will employ a defensive strategy against strong teams like Provo and hope for luck in getting a goal, but this was not the case in this contest. American Fork played with just three defenders and went on the attack aggressively throughout the game. "Our effort was identical iden-tical to (what the players did in) the Timpview game, except that we dominated more," said coach Saul Mon-tano. Mon-tano. "Provo just didn't get that many chances." He continued, "The big difference was our field. The kids spread out and feel comfortable at home, while Provo couldn't get their throws or corner kicks into the box." The Bulldogs play on their football field, which If"- fK t fcl 1 4i w "in 1 , " Caveman fullback Ryan Jones prepares to cut off an attack by the Bulldogs Thursday. is crowned and very narrow for soccer. "This was a good game," Montano went on. "Everybody "Every-body came out to play, though I wish the ball had bounced our way a little more." He said he moved Bryce Schneider out of the defense to the front line, where "he ', gave us a spark on offense and more control up front." v He added that Warbur ton made many saves and Jared Vogelsberg is learning learn-ing to be more assertive and play with more confidence. "Adam (Hansen) and Tyler (Beardall) are still breaking down the defenses," he said. "We did everything right, and we took the shots we wanted, but they just did not go in." As the year winds down, Montano said it's "exciting to see American Fork play at home. People can't just come in and walk all over us now." The Cavemen wrap up the season tomorrow at Timpview. Varsity game time is 4 p.m. AF Steel Days tennis Caveman tennis team finishes second tournament to return The American Fork High School boys tennis team has had a very successful suc-cessful season, finishing second in the region standings to Timpview. On three different occasions this year, the Cavemen made a clean sweep of the opposing team by winning all five matches. On three other matches, American Fork won four of the individual indi-vidual matches and lost just one. The Cavemen are led by captain and top-ranked singles player Brigg Barron. Except for a close, hard-fought hard-fought loss against Timpviews top-ranked top-ranked returning state champion, Barron is undefeated for the entire year without losing a set. Barron will go into the region tournament seeded as number 2 in 1 singles. Andrew Parker is AFs 2 singles player and continues to come on strong. During the second half of the season, Andrew has only lost one match. He, too, has earned a 2 seed in the region tournament. Paul McAllister, 3 singles player, has had the best year of his high school career, winning the majority of his matches. He will most likely enter the region tournament as a 2 seed. It took the latter part of the season for American Fork to find a winning combination at the 1 doubles spot. Alex Myers and Jordan Schetell have proven to be a winning combination and continue to get better with every match. AFs 2 doubles team was undefeated undefeat-ed entering this week. Britton Bowen and Eric Heier have proven to be very consistent in their match play and have given their opponents fits with their lobs and their excellent placement place-ment of the ball. According to coach Bryan Barron, "it is our goal to see that each of our varsity players perform well in the region tournament so that they all qualify for State." The region tournament tourna-ment is today and tomorrow at Provo. American Fork's JV team has also performed well in their region matches, match-es, with Lionel Moueska, Chris Hog-gan, Hog-gan, Steve Scott and Matt VanAlfen.
