Students from across the state in grades six-12 presented pre-sented history research projects, competing for the opportunity to advance to the National History Day Contest, June 15-19 at the University of Maryland. Winners were announced at the end of the day and those receiving first and second place awards were invited to the national competition. com-petition. "Rights and Responsibilities Responsibili-ties in History" was the theme for this year's event. Timothy Baker of American Ameri-can Fork Junior High School was named the Orand Prize Winner for his outstanding research paper, Megan Gourley earns YW recognition Megan CJourley, 17, daughter of Richard and Wendy Gourley of Alpine, received her Young Womanhood Woman-hood Recognition award on April 28. She is a member of the Alpine 9th Ward. As part of her service projects, she worked with abused children and created creat-ed a cookbook. Megan is a junior at Lone "The Cherokee Removal," which chronicles the U.S. government's abuse of Cherokee rights during their 19th century removal from Georgia to the Indian Territory. Well-written and based on extensive primary research, it shows exemplary exempla-ry use of this year's history fair theme. Timothy was awarded $400 for his efforts. Lindsey Rhodes, also from American Fork Junior High School, received third place for her paper on "Women in Action." She received a certificate and cell phone. Alysha will be competing for her share of over $20,000 in scholarships, prizes and specialty gifts. She will compete in the Miss Teen division, one of three divisions competing in modeling routines which include casual and formal wear. Most important, Alysha will display her personality and interview skills. Personality Per-sonality is the number one aspect that each contestant is judged on during all phases of competition. Winners in the Salt Lake City contest will advance to the national competition to take place in Orlando, Fla. Elder Cody Victor Colledge, son of Kris Colledge of Lehi and the late Victor Colledge, has recently returned from serving in the Dominican Republic Santo Domingo West LDS Mission.
