Show New Utah! - Wednesday, May 16, 2001 - Page 9 Hunters have a second chance for permit Although Utah's first 2001 Big Game Draw is now over, hunters who missed their first opportunity opportu-nity to pick up deer tags are encouraged to take advantage advan-tage of the remaining permits per-mits for the general statewide archery buck deer hunt and the Northern, Central, and Northeastern Region general gener-al buck deer hunts. A second sec-ond draw for these permits will soon be held for these tags and applications for the draw will be accepted until 5 p.m., May 21. Utah residents who want a Central or Northeastern region permit are strongly encouraged to apply: Judi Tutorow, Wildlife Licensing Coordinator for the Division of Wildlife Resources, reported, "There are only 119 Central Region resident permits left and they will definitely go in the draw. I also have a feeling that the 5,288 resident Northeastern Region permits per-mits that are left over will go in the draw, too." . Nonresidents are strongly strong-ly encouraged to apply as well. Beginning July 26, all nonresident permits not taken in this draw will be available, on a first-come, first-served basis, to Utah residents and nonresidents who haven't already obtained a permit. This is the first time Utah residents resi-dents have been allowed to purchase permits not taken by nonresidents and they'll probably buy most of them. "If nonresidents want a Utah buck deer hunting permit for this fall, it's crucial cru-cial that they get their application in by 5 p.m., May 21 Tutorow said. More than 5700 resident statewide archery permits remain while only 119 resident resi-dent Central Region RifleMuzzleloader permits still exist. Remaining Northern Region permits include more than 13,800 and more than 5,200 Northeastern Permits are available. Southern and Southeastern RifleMuzzleloader permits have already sold out. Tutorow doesn't think all of the Northern Region and statewide archery permits will be taken in the draw, but she still encourages hunters to apply for one now. She recommended, "If you obtain one now youH assure yourself of getting a permit and youH save yourself your-self the hassle of having to obtain one later. This is especially important for hunters who don't have easy access to the Internet. If they don't obtain a permit in the draw theyll have to drive to a Division office, and stand in line, to get a permit later." Hunters who have an American Express, Discover, MasterCard or Visa credit card can apply for one of the remaining permits online at the Division of Wildlife Resources' Internet web site (www.nr.state.ut.usdwrdw r.htm). Those who don't want to use a credit card can apply by mailing an application and their fees. The same application form used in the initial Big Game Draw will be used to apply in the draw for remaining permits. Applications are available on the Division's web site and from hunting and fishing license agents, Division of Wildlife Resources, offices and hunter education centers. In addition to the remaining general buck deer permits, there are still a few remaining resident spike bull elk Cooperative Wildlife Management Unit permits available. These include three permits remaining for Old Woman Plateau (Hunt 400), four tags on Boobe Hole (Hunt 401), one for Grazing Pasture (Hunt 402), and three for the Johnson Mountain Ranch (Hunt 403).
