'fCT'CS'ZS SCTiS Sf?"" cc?5i? sc?--5 Ti When a Clock From A.F. Went to the World's Fair By Edna S. Walker In 1893 a World Fair was held in Chicago, Illinois. It was the desire of the people to send an item for display from American Ameri-can Fork. Since silk raising had been quite successful in the community, com-munity, on April 20, 1892 Relief Society President Mary S. Hindley suggested, in a meeting, meet-ing, that a flag made of Utah produced silk be sent to the fair to be held the following year in Chicago. The plan met with enthusiam at first, but was changed and a clock was sent which was made entirely of Utah materials. The clock was most attractive and efficient. effi-cient. After the fair it was returned and the people debated debat-ed as to what should be done with it. A suggestion was made that it be sent to the Salt Lake Temple. Others recommended that it be sold and the money used to buy a town clock. The decision was finally made to keep it at home and give it to the Relief Society. On September Septemb-er 13, 1914 it was given to the Alpine Stake Tabernacle by Hannah S. Lapish who was local chairman of the fair com mittee. The presentation was made while the clock was striking eleven. President Stephen L. Chipman accepted it in behalf of the Tabernacle Building Committee and the people of the stake with a vote of thanks and appreciation. The clock was inscribed with the following inscription: American Fork Worlds Fair Exhibit 183 Contributed by the Citizens of American Fork, Utah Presented to Alpine Stake Tabernacle 1914 By Hannah S. Lapish Chairman World's Fair Committee The clock now stands in our Pioneer Relic Hall or Museum. Although the hands are still and no sound comes from it, it is an interesting and handsome reminder of a project carried on by the people of the community. com-munity. (The writer would appreciate further details as to who made the clock and how that any one could supply.) H J 7 Vets Should Apply For Benefits in Spite of Lost D ocumenis Lost documents should not deter veterans from applying for Veterans Administration benefits, the agency's Chief Benefits Director. Ruf us H. Wilson Wil-son said today. "We have trained benefits counselors in each of our 58 regional offices who can assist veterans and their dependents in establishing eligibility," he said. Wilson is responsible for administering ad-ministering the G. I. Bill education educa-tion and training program as well as VA's home loan, compensation, com-pensation, pension, and insurance insur-ance programs. "Secondary proof of marriage mar-riage or birth can be accepted when this information is required to establish eligibility for benefits or claims for increased in-creased benefits," Mr. Wilson said. A certified statement of marriage mar-riage is sufficient on applications applica-tions for compensation and education benefits for veterans, veter-ans, widows, and orphaned children, provided it is the first marriage for both the veteran and spouse, and the VA has no contradictory information on file, Mr. Wilson added. Similarly, a certified statement state-ment is acceptable for documenting docu-menting birth of a veteran's child and as proof of age and relationship in disability cases. Complete information on all veterans benefits is available at local VA Regional Offices THE CLOCK that went to the or from representatives of local Chicago World's Fair from veterans organizations. The boys, under the direction of their Cubmaster, Brent Davis, participated in their ward Physical Fitness Olympics, Olym-pics, which consisted of the following events: push ups, sit ups, broadjump, 50 yard dash, Softball throw for distance. They won in each of their respective age groups and entered en-tered as a team from Pack No. 3709 in the stake competition. They were victorious in their stake finals and their score was submitted for the Utah State championships. Again, their score brought them victory as they came in 1st place in the State of Utah Southern division. Next, their achievement was sent on to Area 2 of the Boy Scouts of America in competition against all the Utah and Idaho packs. Finally, after winning the Utah-Idaho championships their score was sent to the Western region which includes all the 13 Western States plus Hawaii and Japan. Our Utah boys placed 2nd out of this group in which there were thousands of entrants. A great tribute to our Cub Scouts in Utah, and American Fork.
