Show s siomiss With Tom Griffiths- Did you notice in the news where our Senator Moss attached at-tached his signature to a bill that advances the cause of labor. It means that a handful of striking men in the construction business can close down the entire en-tire project. The Salt Lake City Chamber of Commerce wrote to the Senator Sena-tor and voiced their objection to this bill. In replying, Senator Moss stated he had studied the aspects of the bill and decided it was the correct thing to do. He failed to say that big labor had always contributed liberally to his campaigns and he was repaying this favor. This incident reminds me of an incident where a newspaper ediiur asked a politician how he felt about the drinking problem. His answer is typical. Dear Mr. Editor: "I am sorry that you asked the question as I had not intended intend-ed to raise such a controversial subject at this time. However, I want you to know that I do not shun a controversy. To the cont-rary-I'll take a stand on any issue anywhere and anytime regardless of how fraught with controversy it may be. You have asked me how I feel about whiskey. Well brother, here's how I stand on the matter." "If when you say whiskey, or demon rum, you mean the devil's brew, the poison scourge, the bloody monster; that which deviles innocence, dethrones reason, creates misery mis-ery and poverty, yes literally takes the bread out of the mouths of babies. If you mean that evil drink that topples the Christian man and woman from pinnacles or righteous and gracious living into the bottomless bottom-less pit of despair and hopelessness, hopeless-ness, then certainly I am against it with all my power might and mind." "But if when you say whis key , that means the oil that lubricates conversation. The philosophic wine and ale that is consumed when good fellows get together; that puts a song in their hearts and laughter on their lips and the warm glow of contentment in their eyes. If you mean the Christmas Cheer, if you mean that stimulating drink that puts springiness in an old mans steps on a frosty morning; if you mean the drink that enables man to magnify his joy and happiness and to forget, if only for a moment, life's great tragedies, heartaches and sorrows. sor-rows. If you mean that drink, the sale of which pours into the treasury untold millions of dollars, dol-lars, which are used to provide tender care for our little crippled crip-pled children, the deaf, dumb, blind and our pitifully aged and infirm. That builds highways, hospitals and schools. Then brother, I am for it. This is my stand Mr. Editor - I will not retract nor compromise." In these troubled times wlien inflation is robbing the life's blood of the American people our politicians are worrying about giving more strike privileges privi-leges to organized labor. I feel like Winston Churchill once said, "we should kick the rascals out." More and more the American people are becoming the victims of high pressure organized groups: For example the ink is hardly dry on the teachers contracts con-tracts when the U.E.A. is already al-ready making demands for next year. They are asking for a forty three million dollar increase in-crease in school funds for 1976. They propose that school boards be authorized to levy up to three mills on property tax. This is when my fur begins to raise. I resent very strongly any organization organi-zation proposing to raise the taxes on my home to insure their private demands. Shakespeare once wrote, '0 it is excellent to have a giants strength; but it is tyrannous to use it like a giant." This is what the President of the U.E.A. said, in urging Utah's congressional delegation to support the bill. "Let us not be put off with cries of "States Rights" and "local autonomy" as disguises for blocking this progressive legislation." Doesn't this sound like the voice of a giant?
