Show With Tom Have you ever stopped to think of the significance of words? Oh yes, words make a language so we can understand each other. But words can be love, comfort, insults, and many other thirgs- It's all acnrdip to how they are used. For example, the shortest verse in the Bible is composed of only two words, "Jesus wept." Yet there are no two words that has ever been written writ-ten that is so full of humility and tenderness than this short verse. The Lord's Prayer has only fifty six words, yet it is known and used throughout the Christian Chris-tian world, and probably will be known as long as man is on the earth. It is man speaking to his creator, telling of his inward yearnings. Then there is the Twenty-Third Twenty-Third Psalm. It has one hundred and eighteen words, but where in all creation could you find literature that is more appealing appeal-ing and beautiful? The Gettysburg Address is like marshall drums to the American who reads it. It stirs within him a strong feeling of loyalty and devotion to country. It is the words of a great President Presi-dent going out to a people who needed help and encouragement. encourage-ment. Yet it contains only two hundred and sixty six words. Now, let's go from the sublime sub-lime to the ridiculous. Recently the U.S. Government developed an order on cabbage ptices. Guess how many words it took? Twenty-six thousand, nine hundred and eleven. Is it any wonder the country is in such a mess? A few years ago a woman wrote a book titled "Silent Spring." It described a spring without birds who had died from the result of toxic sprays. SPRING CLEANING! Memorial Day, at least in these parts, is almost a day without flowers. Some knot-heads knot-heads back in Washington decided that almost all holidays should fall on Monday. As a will' Memorial Day was almost al-most a week early. If it had been held where it was originally original-ly set, some of our flowers would be blooming. It is not hard to visualize that sometime in the future our Independence Inde-pendence Day will be changed and named after some politician who thinks he is big stuff. It is not beyond the imagination to think that Christmas might also be changed by some ding-bat politico who wants his name to go down in history. Don't laugh, stranger things has happen . d. In these days of the handout, food stamps, and easy welfare the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson comes to us with a message of inspiration, "Trust thyself; every heart vibrates to that iron string. Accept the place that Divine Providence has found for you, the society of your contemporaries, the connection con-nection of events. Great men have always done so, and confided con-fided themselves child-like to the genius of their age, betraying betray-ing their perception that the Eternal was stirring at their heart, working through their hands, predominating in all their being. Let a man then know his worth and keep things under his feet . . . work in every hour, paid or unpaid, see only that thou work, and thou canst not excape the reward ... of honest work, done to thine own approbation, appro-bation, God will not have his work made manifest by cowards." These classical words should hit us with special force in these to House Painting days of uncertainty and anxiety. For when we are truly conscious cons-cious of our individuality and know that we do not need connections con-nections or contacts but only a few staunch friends to overcome over-come life's hurdles, we become champions and know that we can take care of ourselves. I like Mark Twain's philosophy philo-sophy on words. He said, "An average English word is four letters and a half. By hard, honest labor, I've dug all the lare words out of my vocabulary vocabu-lary and shaved it down till the average is three and a half. I never write Metropolis for the same price for city and I never write policeman because I can get the same money for cop. Then there was the girl whose English teacher told her, "Use a word ten times and it will be yours for life." She closed her eyes and chanted chant-ed under her breath. "Fred, Fred, Fred, Fred. Fred, I red, Fred, Fred, Fred, Fred." It is impossible to defeat an ignorant man in argument. Politicans and TV news commentators com-mentators share sunn-thing in common - they must always have something urgent to say even when nothing urgently needs to be said. A genius is one who shoots at something no one else can see, and hits it.
