Show AMERICAN FORK CITIZEN THURSDAY, DECEMBER 19, 1374 v je-i , . by VWV S. TsTiK Sokim to a Sticky Problem This is the week before Christmas Christ-mas and for those of us who are a little late this year, there is siii! hope! This is a week of tired feet from that last minute Christmas shopping. It is a week of tired brains trying to figure out what you should buy for the "hard-to-please" names on your shopping shop-ping list. But, the universal malady of the week is tired tongue. Yes, you read that correctly, cor-rectly, but in case you missed the implication, i ll fly that one past again. The tired tongue syndrome malady is real. The tongue gets a real workout during this season, sea-son, what with the Christmas cards to stamp and lick, the Christmas seals to add to your mail and packages and the Christmas ribbons that are self-sticking self-sticking if you lick them in the proper place. I can't really offer you much consolation for those tired feet or an exhausted brain, but the United States Postal Service has proven itself to be all heart by offering relief for Mred tongues. ton-gues. This, I must hasten to add, could be the means of putting put-ting the Christmas spirit back into Christmas. Sta mp buy ,.rs were greeted at the local post office this season with a friendly hello and a supply sup-ply of self-sticking, self-cancelling self-cancelling stamps. Sound reasonable! rea-sonable! It sounds fantastic( It is guaranteed to put your Christmas mail into the system faster and assure mail arriving at its destination up to a day earlier. Good news, indeed. The only problem is that the local special interest Christmas stamps have not kept pace. Even though we can enjoy the modern version in postage stamps, there is nothing to help us bypass the tongue when we try to attach the appropriate charity stamps to our envelopes. enve-lopes. For instance, you wouldn't think of putting a Christmas card in the mail without with-out at least two seals from the Lung Association. If you are reasonably charitable, you will also be buying stamps to help the Boys Ranch; Boy's Town, Several dedicated individuals have had to buy bigger Christmas Christ-mas cards this year to accomodate accomo-date the space requirements of their collection of stamps that don't do a thing to get the card horn the point cf mailing to its ultimate destination, I understand that in the bigger big-ger cities, there has been some difficulty about the processing of the self-sticking, self-canceling self-canceling stamps. They put the zip code scanner on "tilt" or some such complication. But, here in our sheltered mountain valley, the stamps offer a little relief for tired tongues. ton-gues. After putting 200 of the tongue saving stamps into place, all I can say. is "Gentlemen, "Gentle-men, I salute you." For those of you who still doubt that this invention has littie social consequence, I remind you that the self-sticking stamps leave our over-worked tongue free to assume other duties which are much more relevant this week before Christmas, such as tasting rum sauce for the Christmas pudding, pud-ding, mulling egg nog and licking lick-ing candy canes. Go to it! I recently saw this among other graffitti in my neighborhood neighbor-hood Laundromat. "Better to have loved and lest than to do 30 pounds of wash each week." The gift of love is one of the few presents that isn't exchanged ex-changed after Christmas.
