Show JOLT1 J U U by Betty G. Spencer This may be edging on being disloyal to my esteemed employer, employ-er, but I am going to make my children stop reading newspapers! newspap-ers! In plain English, the kids watched the sit-ins and shutdowns shut-downs and slow-downs on television tele-vision and blazoned across the newspapers recently. They were suitably Impressed that the strikers strik-ers were not required to work, nor comply with the regulations of the area. In fact, the strikers took on a very desirable gown when viewed by my dissident offspring. off-spring. When it came to that particular par-ticular day of the week when I raise my vacuum wand, put the furniture polish, the dusting cloths and the window cleaner out ready for action, I expected the same reluctant cooperation I somehow glean every other week. I am so used to weak and long winded excuses that I no longer am impressed and sort of turn off the exposed ear while the kiddies kid-dies tell me their tales of woe and the overflow of reasons why they can't be helpers on that particular day. What did I get? A positively negative response. When told to get with It and pick up her room and dust, my daughter said, "Sorry, Mom, but I'm on strike today.' My teenage teen-age son soon took up the plea and bowed out with a fervent, "I haven't started picketing, but you are unfair to unorganized labor and I'm going to work where the pay is better." Can you image the cherry little lit-tle thoughts going around in my brain at that moment? I tried being both reasonable, then unreasonable un-reasonable with equally unsuitable unsuit-able results. Finally, I decided that if the housecleaning was ever going to get done, I would have to be like the little red hen and do it myself. I labored, I suffered, I complained, I despaired, des-paired, but finally I managed to get the vacuuming, the dusting, the moping and the windows done saving the step sweeping and porch hosing for another day. My daughter was still sacked out on her bed, enjoying the volume she had brought home from the library. I guess I did. My husband was working afternoon shift and was safely out of the battle ara, so I made myself one ham sanwich, opened a can of tomato juice and some potato pota-to chips and settled down for a snack. Then I finished the repast, re-past, cleaned up the crumbs and went dov,n to my study to write. Hungry voices soon followed me down the stairs. "Mom, when are we having supper?" and "I'm home. What have you got to eat?" the voices called. Imagine their surprise when I greeted them with their own response and a wide grin. "Sorry," "Sor-ry," I said, "the kitchen is closed until further notice. I'm on strike!"
