Show p' UMH 1 JJ.1 R IjreYiliss 1 Peity J By Betty C. Spencr Here we are only six-weeks Into the school year and already I have learned an entirely new vocabulary! Anyone who still thfcjks of school as a brain factory where compliant children are taught only reading, 'riting and'rith-metic and'rith-metic needs to take a close look at the sophisticated schools of today. Not only are my four children still in school, ranging from the seventh year ?t one of the country's coun-try's largest universities, to one in a military school In Maryland, Mary-land, a high school scholar and in elementary school student, but I am breaking the age-barrier by going back to college myself. The military school is adopting adopt-ing a new "group therapy" training, train-ing, would you believe it, and the young recruits are blossoming blossom-ing under the liberated approach. The high school student is involved in-volved with a behavior modification modifica-tion program and the youngest child is having a go at team teaching foi' the first time. Me? One or my textbooks is a volume sure to change my life called "Psycho-Cybernetics." The elementary school scholar has adjusted to the greatest number num-ber of changes If her new vocabulary vo-cabulary is any Indication. I have learned that she does not go to school in a room. Hers is a pod. She does not have "physical" barriers in the pod and can see the other groups of children as she checks in at "home base." The teachers are right up to the minute, too. You won't hear one of these enlightened souls saying, "Now, children, let's not do that." They say, "CooUtl" And the kids do. The teachers advised us to use honesty as our policy. Today, the teachers get much better results with "Tell it like it is." They say It, too. And what about nervous kids? The new breed of teachers soothes them with a sincere, "Don't get uptight." up-tight." The straightforward approach solves a lot of problems, lets the student know exactly where they stand. Used to be teachers stood out in the hall ringing thai old hand bell. No more. Today the principal prin-cipal has been replaced by an electrical monster which dutifully duti-fully tolls the hour of beginning, dismissal, break (recess is an old-fashioned term, Mom) and puts him 'n instant communication communica-tion with ooth teachers and students stu-dents at his institution of learning. learn-ing. No one can escape. The electronic marvel is ever present and the ding of the tell preceeds a polite, "May I have your attention, at-tention, please?" 1 visited the luxurious accomodations accomo-dations of my youngest, recently. I was just glad I made the visit on parents night. Had she been with me, she would have been so embarrassed at my lack of knowledge. know-ledge. The new wing looked like a contemporary hotel lobby. Plush, carpeted to Jie walls and circular, movable dividers and all. I was dazzled. Pleased. "And the whole group can sit in the circular amphitheater for singing and things like that," I concluded. My daughter gave me a withering glance. "Mother," she eluded. "You are so old fashioned. That isn't an amphitheater, that is the pit!" If school is going to continue to bring all these vocabulary changes, looks like I'll have to keep on going to college right up to the time r little granddaughter grand-daughter starts kuergarten, so Know Your Chimber of Commerce E; Thomas Griffith The Chamber of Commerce is an organization dedicated to improve im-prove the community through service to 'he local citizens.
