So declares Dr. Paul Dudley White, eniment heart specialist, who religiously follows his own advice by taking vigorous daily exercise. Dr. White has powerful company com-pany in a growing legion of specialists spec-ialists and physicians who endorse en-dorse regular exercise and physical phy-sical activity as part of a general gen-eral prescription to protect the heart and help prevent premature prema-ture heart attacks and strokes. Exercise provides much more than a way of spending calories to help control weight. Resear-h has turned up an increasing evidence evi-dence as to why exercise may protect the human heart. Through the ages, man has relied on his muscles and streiig-th streiig-th as well as his wits for survival. sur-vival. When you exercise or work physically hard, your heart must work harder and more efficient ly to distribute blood everywhere, every-where, including to its own muscular mus-cular tissues. This helps to develop de-velop what !s known as colater-al colater-al circulation, a richer, more extensive network of blood channels chan-nels to assure a good supply to all areas of the heart muscle.
