Show THE AMERICAN FORK CITIZEN, Thursday, July 20, 1961 Don Abel and Grant Schaumburg Attend Mathematics Institute In order to further the interest inter-est of bright students in math ematics, the University of Utah recently completed a four-week program, the Summer Institute In Mathematics and Physics for Talented High School Students, organized by the National Science Sci-ence Foundation. During the Institute, 35 students from Utah, Idaho, Nevada and Wyoming Wyo-ming studied in the Department Depart-ment of Mathematics at the University of Utah under the direction di-rection of Professor E. Allen Davis. The high school students took up algebra, the Axiomatic Method, elmentary numerical analysis, and topics in physics The laboratory experience of the student lay in three general gen-eral areas: a study of the Law of Conservation of Energy, the accelreation of gravity, and some insight into the structure of matte. Neal A. Maxwell, Assistant to the President, University of Utah, addressed the students at a ceremony marking completion of the institute. He said the students were the scho'alrs of tomorrow. He emphasized the United States' need for high quality scientists to offset the quantity of men being educated educat-ed in the Soviet Bloc. "That is why, in one respect, excellence in our democracy is so important to cultivate," he continued. Mr. Maxwell concluded by urging ur-ging the scholar to continue their fine work and lead future fu-ture students to achievement of higher goals. Pieces of old garden hose cut about eighteen inches long and painted to match the porch swing may be slipped over the chains of the swing before hanging hang-ing it. They will prevent pinching pinch-ing and dirty hands, and are easy to clean. Survey Shows U.S. Average Cost of Funeral The cost of the average a-dult a-dult funeral selected in the United States during 1960 was $708; When all services conducted con-ducted art" considered, the figure fig-ure was $575. That is what the annual study of Funeral Service Ser-vice Facts and Figures, conducted con-ducted for the National Funeral Funer-al Directors Assn. by Eugene F. Foran points out. Neither of these figures include vault, clothing, cemetery expense, honorarium for the clergyman, flowers or additional . transportation transpor-tation charges. Seventy-eight per cent of all services held were regular a-dult a-dult funerals. The survey shows they produced 96 of the funer al home fee Income. Children's, charity and welfare lunerals and services and shipment calls constituted 22 of the total services, but produced only 4 per cent of the fee income. The .study reveals that tht' average "profit margin" per funeral of all services conducted, con-ducted, even including vaults and clothing sales, was $54. Salaries are tht' largest item of funeral home, expense, the survey sur-vey declares; Other major expenses ex-penses art? maintenance of building and furnishings, merchandise mer-chandise cost, automotive equip ment and taxes. The investment range per establishment, es-tablishment, is from $67,724 for funeral homes conducting an average of 67 services per year to$366,579 for those that averaged aver-aged 538 funerals in 1960. The average funeral home owner's salary was $8,402. Mr. Foran states that this 1960 study of Funeral Service Facts and Figures is based on a representative sample totaling 91,660 funerals conducted by funeval directors in all regions of the United States. Of the funeral homes participating: 61 per cent conducted less than 100 services; 27 per cent be-twtwfen be-twtwfen 100-199 funerals; T per cent between 200-299; and 5 per cent . had more than 300 funerals in 1960. Mr. Foran is a business counsellor coun-sellor with wide experience in the funeral service field. He maintains his office in Decatur, Illinois. The National Funeral Direct ors Assn. - an affiliation of state associations - is the largest larg-est association of funeral direct ors in the United States. Its more than 14,000 members annually an-nually conduct about 80 per cent of all funeral services held in America. Executive offices of the assn. are located in Milwaukee, Wis.
